Wait wait wait a minute. It really comes down to do you reload? 30-06 is a better case for a wider range of bullet weights if you reload else .308 is much better IMHO. Generally speaking more widely available surplus ammo, lots of hunting loads, shorter action, and it hits good out at distance. 30-06 is a longer action and yes you can put more powder in the case for the same bullet weigh, but that doesn't mean it's going to translate to better range and accuracy down range. 30-06 can reliably take game on all 7 continents but if your only looking to maybe hunt on five I would go with the .308

I know of a LGS in Stanislaus county that receives for free, only pay dros and tax... They are out there, just have to look...

Fellas, some of yall getting way off track here. The OP wants a "budget" rifle. Most likely never use it to hunt as he states its for practice. Hes most likely only killing the sheit out of paper targets. You dont need anything fancy for that. 30-06 will do just fine. Get efficient with and and see what works for you and use those pointers when you get a "hunting" rifle.

.30-06 would be my choice. I love my Winchester 70 chambered for it. Not sure you can find that particular rifle under $500 though, but at any rate .30-06 is the way to go IMO. Although .308 ammo is a bit cheaper. Selection is good for both, the 2 most popular 30-cal rifle cartridges aside from x39 which is obviously not a good choice.
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

308 is plenty capable out to 600yds, esp in the 175gr loadings. Palma shooters go 1k with it.

3006 stuffed full of powder in a bolt gun just plain suck. There is a reason M2 GI ball is loaded mild. When it came time to develop 308, they basically cloned the M2 ball but in a shorter case. 3006 has a taper in the body, so it is more liable to stretch than 308 and you'll get case head separation sooner. And 308 cases are easier to come by via range pickup.

I know it is double of what you want to spend, but Ruger PRS rifle gets you into the PRS game which is great for practice. 6.5 family is all the range because of mild recoil and excellent external ballistics.

Read reviews on some of those dirt cheap Remingtons. Several models were poorly engineered and no matter what you did to them they'd still be junk.

Have you fired one? I have fired 3 of them this year. A .223, .308, and this last Friday a .243!

They are not junk. If the stock was better would compare up to the Tikka! The barrel reminds me of the old military bolt action. Not thin and whippy. Definitely not a bull barrel.

Gun is light enough to carry bit heavier than a Rem Model 7.

I know I have bashed Remington Model 700's on here. Mainly for the price you don't get a lot. $650 / $700. But the 783 at $400 / $470 offers a lot of value.

I agree. I think the 783 is comparable to the Tikka with plastic stock. Put a Boyds wood stock on the 783 and it's comparable to the Tikka with wood stock. The 783 is a little heavier, but that means it'll have less kick with cartridges like 308 and 30-06.

Most target shooters seem to favor the .308

Actions are shorter and stiffer. There will be a more economical use of powder.
There might be other reasons, but those are the two I can come up with.

I haven't fired one, just seen all sorts of bad reviews. It's more of a heads-up for the OP to do some research. It's great if the issues have been resolved and if Remington has a valid competition to Ruger in that price range.

Many times when a company tries to introduce a product outside its traditional price range and for different market segment, the result is less than stellar in the first iteration or two. Remington R51 handgun comes to mind.

I owned the Remington 770 in 308, but I never shot it.
I understand that the 783 is an improved version of the 770.
Basically a knock off of the 700.
Dicks has a 700 ADL for about $100 more. Idk tho.

The 783 is more comparable to Tikka, Savage Axis, or Ruger American than it is to the 700.
