When do you have too much ammo?

When you have to move it all
    When your house catches fire

I keep telling my wife there is no such thing as:

            -Too much ammo
            -Too many magazines

For the moment she believes me.

What is an acceptable amount of Ammo to have. I thought it was weird that people purchased 1000 rounds at a time. Now im guilty of such an act.

Just wondering how much ammo enthusiasts keep on hand.

Do you acquire it just to have it? Keep it for a rainy day? Investment? SHTF?

It depends what you are preparing for. Are you preparing for shortages, SHTF, or both? And honestly, whatever I USED to think was enough has been significantly increased as of late due to the various shortages.

For SHTF, I think a minimum of 2K rifle rounds, 1K Pistol and 1K Shotgun with the idea that I could trade a bit of this for things I need, if necessary...oh and a whole bunch of .22.

On top of the above and for general shortages, I am now of the opinion that 3K-5K of EACH of your preferred rounds is a necessary amount...adjusted for how much you currently shoot. Seeing what we've seen recently, I don't think it's unrealistic to have an 18 month supply on hand of whatever you typically shoot. And you shouldn't have to tap your SHTF supply to get you through a shortage.

When you die and still have a room full you did not get to shoot and no one to leave it to.

Yup. Didn't have a fire but had to move it all. My back still kind of hurts when I walk by the locker ...

I few years ago USED to keep a few boxes- maybe 5 or 6- of 5.56 and 300BLK, a box or two of 9mm, 45CP, 357, etc., and maybe a single box for "hunting guns" like the 30/06, 25/06, etc. and I never really kept 22LR on hand, but that has all changed.

I keep at least 1500 rounds of loaded 5.56/300BLK ready to go, and the same or slightly more 9mm/45ACP. I dont keep a lot of .308 on hand but that will change slowly. I buy 22LR every single time I see it, and make monthly orders when vendors have it on hand. If I drop beloe 10K rounds or 22LR I get very anxious.
I keep enough components on hand to make at least 2000rnds of 300BLK and around 12K rounds of 5.56 at all times.
The reality is not that I am prepping per se, its just that I watched what others went through a few years ago when there were literally lines around the block at gun stores to buy ARs and 22 disappeared from the shelves and hasnt been seen in quantity since. I got lucky that I saw that coming and had stocked up, but watched a lot of friends paying ridiculous prices for what little ammo (and guns) were out there. I have ammo and reloading components for calibers I do not reload for because I know I can trade or sell them and who knows, I might pick up a gun in that caliber down the road.
