This kinda feels like an, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" kind of scenerio.
Ammo - stored well - will outlast you
No, it's not odd to stock ammo in calibers you don't yet own
I measure my stock in a combination of loaded rounds and reloading components. I like to have a minimum 500-1000 rounds loaded (per caliber) just so that I don't have to rush to the reloading bench if I want to go shooting. The rest is easier to store as components. Obvious exceptions for rounds like 22LR or calibers I don't yet reload for.Comment

When you say that you have a ton of ammo and mean it literally, you have a good start.Check back later for a witty comment.Comment

When you start using loaded cases of ammo as furniture...it's too much.
When you use loaded cases to build a clubhouse for your kids....it's too much"I prefer peace. But if trouble must come, let it come in my time, so that my children can live in peace."

Min 1,000 per firearm as "stored" and buy as you shoot for range fun. Usually 500 a time. But always have a reserve!!!
