After reading this thread, let me give the OP some advice. Do some training. I've trained in multiple styles including Kali Escrima, Applegate/Sykes-Fairbane methods. I've even assisted with giving training with a foreign military H2H trainer in knives, bayonet, sentry removal, etc., blah, blah, <insert tough guy talk>, blah.

I know some techniques, but I've never been in a knife fight. If I can, I'll run. And yeah, you can have my man card.

Best defense against knifes: Train your 100 yard sprint. The 21 foot rule is real. Carry a tourniquet and know how to use it with both hands on all limbs. Carry a good pistol. Practice good situational awareness and remember, its probably not worth getting cut. Even a small slash can alter your life. Or end it.

In my humble opinion, it takes months or years to develop decent martial arts fundamentals. Going to a couple classes and thinking you're ready is only a liability in my eyes.

I ordered one of these but sent it back when I came to my senses.

Yes, I realized I have no need for a one use blade like the Matriarch. Chances are 1 in a zillion that I would ever need to use it. Being that it serves no other purpose, I exchanged it for a Military.

            Cheers

Honestly, I think knife is the last fighting technique you should learn because guns give some type of distance advantage against other.

Knife....close and hand to hand distance...

I've been open carrying a knife for many years and I would rather run than die due to wounds caused from a knife fight. I value my life vs my man card, and my wife values me as well

Strongly urge you to look into Eskrima, Kali, or another martial arts dojo which focuses on edged weapon training. Doesn't have to be a knife. There are a variety of items which could be used to defend and subdue a threat. While videos present lots of great information, they cannot replace the sensation and knowledge behind quality training. Googled Kali in Sacramento. Found several dojos.

Lots of knife and machete fights on liveleak.com. Almost all of them are over in a few seconds after a quick flurry of action. It usually looks like both parties are happy to retire as their rationale mind starts comprehending what their adrenaline minds got them into.

Straight up, no one leaves a knife fight uncut.
You WILL get cut, you WILL lose blood and it's going to hurt like a b****.
I remember watching an interview with some African villagers decades ago. They all were adamant they'd rather face warlords and criminals armed with guns rather than machete's and knives. The brutal and grotesque bloodbath caused by edged weapons was universally feared over firearms.

knife fights seldom happen (k vs k)- nobody wins that way. either you attack or get attacked with one.

Following others advice, highly recommend looking into Kali/Escrima. Should be a few schools up and around the Sacramento area. Met Daniel Inosanto while I lived in Stockton. Very cool guy!

Answer...don't bother with the knife. If the guy is really good your screwed fighting on his level K to K even if you see it coming. If the guy's a rooky you could still be screwed. Just shoot him if you have no other choice.

                                I'm going to disagree slightly.

Up front, if one wants to learn to fight with a knife, take a knife fighting class. Take several. Practice.

But both fencing and any of the non-knife MAs (Aikido eventually gets to weapons) teach some useful things one would get in a knife-fighting class.

Remember the Tueller drill? Fencers see that attack dozens of times per class, just don't have a gun to draw, but a kind of blade already drawn. The first thing to UNlearn in fencing is 'linearity' - sport fencing is locked into 14 meters long by 1.5-2 meters wide, with penalties for stepping off the piste. Since one of the first things to do (if you can't avoid the whole thing) is side step the knife guy to change the attack, fencing habits would have to be broken.

The second thing to unlearn from fencing is 'one hit and stop'!

But fencing and MAs will teach footwork, distance, balance, some stress experience, and probably other things I have forgotten that apply to the situation discussed.
