There is no one best .45 handgun. It all depends on what you want to do with it. The best one is the one that you can afford, feels the best in your hand, and the one that you can shoot the most accurately.

For the average bear, I suggest the m&p 45 or full size Glock if it fits you. M&P is far more ergonomic.

For the devotee, an upper end 1911. Dan Wesson's are an excellent gun and probably the best value. PM7 and Guardian are on roster. For less $, a Springfield loaded or ppt a Range Officer. Any new 1911 may require tweaking to get to run reliably. DW and Springfield have excellent service for this. M&P and Glockl very likely be serviceable out of the box. I strongly prefer used Guns for this reason and I prefer to fire 1911's before purchase. A significant % don't run nib.

I would never own a gun which needs a break in period. Good gosh.
So for SD - just wait until you have a solid 1k rounds at the range before it's trustworthy? Not picking on you personally, but I could never stomach this concept. And I have seen folks at the range and at classes that said their 1911 needed more rounds to be reliable.

I concur that unreliable nib Guns are a travesty but I believe that for moderate to low end 1911's it is a statistical truth.

Moderate to low end 1911 reliability is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get.

RIA works fine out of the box for as long as you can shoot them.And they run for $400-600.
High end 1911's do have this issue.

The "best" .45? Oh, boy. That's a Ford/Chevy/Dodge level of religious flame-fest bait.

The "best" .45 is actually the one that you shoot best. For me, that happens to be the Super Redhawk 454, loaded with .45 Colt. Right behind that are the Remington 1911 R1 and the shop's rental Glock 21. For you, it may be something different.
