No. Have you ever tried patterning your shotgun at 10 feet or so? At the kind of range most HD shootings are going to be at, you'll get around a fist to softball sized pattern with buckshot (this is actually what makes the shotgun so awesome). It's not up to chance unless you leave it up to chance.

I don't wound or kill, I stop the threat. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.Comment

You shoot to Stop - not KillComment

actually it's more to say that we interpret robbery and home invasion as suicide on the part of the perp. What happens is entirely on them."You can't stop insane people from doing insane things with insane laws. That's insane!" -- Penn Jillette
Discretionary Issue is the new Separate but Equal.Originally posted by indiandaveIn Pennsylvania Your permit to carry concealed is called a License to carry fire arms. Other states call it a CCW. In New Jersey it's called a crime.Comment

Double Tap, Center Mass, 45 Hollow Points.
IF the intruder is still alive, more power to him. IF he bleeds to death before the cops and paramedics arrive.. tough break.
YES, shoot to stop the Threat, not to Kill.Comment

Just shoot till threat stops. No thinking.
After there's no more threat, call 911, if you didn't have time to yet. Don't say too much...
Then call a lawyer.
Deal with the possible guilt before you decide to buy a gun."I don't know where you came from, and I don't know where you've gone

+100, you clarified the self defense fundamentals, whatever weapons you use is to protect and STOP the life threatening acts. You never shoot to wound or to kill! You shoot to nuetralize the threat. You always aim for center of mass and keep firing until you make sure the threat no longer exists. The ONLY reason that you should ever use a gun on another human being is to protect yourself or someone else!Do it yourself.Comment

How many of you have had to actually shoot someone?
Raise hands?
Ok, I have.
And it sucked.
Everything went wrong. He got the drop on me. He had a semi-autorifle.
But I was, with the grace of G*d, Yaweh, whatever, draw and fire when he was looking the other way.
Four rounds I got off, he cranked off two. I got two solid hits and two clean misses. I fired until I saw him drop the rifle. By then my body had pulled the trigger four times.
If you practice and train, muscle memory WILL TAKE OVER. I mean it. I had plenty of opportunity to train back then and my training took over, I was drawing and firing before my mind registered it. Sounds crazy but it's true. I fired until my eyes and mind registered the threat was gone.
He ran about 60 feet before he decided to lay down and give up.
I aimed for center mass.
I didn't think about 'kill' or 'wound' or whatever. I thought 'STOP THE THREAT'
It was only two days later that I learned that he lived.
He's in prison until 2042. He might live.
And, yes, I deal with it every freaking day./Chris
I have a perfect Burning Man attendance record: zero.
You do know there are more guns in the country than there are in the city.
Everyone and their mums is packin' round here!
Like who?
Farmers.
Who else?
Farmers' mums.Comment

I shoot.. rats to kill.. but yea.. shoot to stop the threat. Make sure he is a threat before you shoot him. Some bum going through your fridge and then storming out, and you putting 2 hulls of 00 buckshot in his back is not a threat. If you seek peace, prepare for warComment
