Shoot to kill. I believe that there would be less chance for you to be sued after the fact.

i would shoot to stop the threat... as for this guilty feeling i'm gonna have to live with i can deal with that. done it in combat and i can do it at home. if it boils down to bad guy vs. me or my loved ones, sorry bad guy you're going down and i'm not going to feel bad about it.

Myth. If you shoot someone in the right chest, they can die. Their heart is not on the left side of their chest. If you shoot someone in the stomach, they can die. The descending aorta and other major blood vessels are down there. You can also hit the spine, resulting in paralysis (which is a good thing if you're defending yourself); a near-hit to the spine can do that.

This topic was covered a week or so ago. It hardly matters where you shoot someone, there's a chance that they'll die. Even in the extremities you have arteries that can cause death pretty quickly. The only question is, will you be dead before your attacker falls over from blood loss or shock?

You don't "kill" to stop a threat.

I want everyone to repeat after me "I shot to protect myself from serious bodily injury and/or death....I shot the suspect to stop his threatening actions". Now you still shoot the vitals parts of the body but you never say you shot to kill.

Sadly, some people will never get it.

And I hope that all the people who worry about "over-penetration" will see what you said and realize that a bullet going through someone you're defending yourself from is actually a good thing. IMO, the spinal column is a much better thing to hit than any of the stuff in front of it. The only way to end a fight more completely and instantly is probably with a head shot.

Officer I called 911. That is the man that attacked me/my family. Yes I will make the complaint. I will answer any and all questions AFTER I speak with my legal counsel. That is ALL you should say to the PD.

This is where Mindset comes into play... If you have trained, and trained, and trained some more, and have mentally conditioned yourself to do whatever is necessary to end the threat, you have a fighting chance.

If you aren't prepared Mindset/Training/Skill... you are not be prepared to defend yourself or others...

You should not be thinking, or disclose, thinking about these matters in a shoot.

Your only real choice is whether you decide to "stop the threat". The final outcome is immaterial other than dude stops coming at you/attacking you/etc.

I have been trained by the police and MSM to retreat, dial 911 and cower while begging the robber to take whatever they want, but please don't hurt me or my family. I would hate to anger the robber and provoke him to more violence. And forget about drawing a gun. It can be taken away and used on me and my loved ones.
