Merc1138, I think you're getting way too serious about the whole friendly discussions here. After all it's just internet forum and NOT even in OT.

You have made your stance very clear and got the last word in several times.
if you think you are right, you really don't have to convince anyone else.

I'm just suggesting, by your attitudes on different post that I've noticed, you take some time relax a little bit, maybe post a little less, maybe get out in the Sun and walk around a little more, go to some of your favorite things.

I say this in a friendly way because I actually appreciate different opinions from members of our gun owning community, and even more so when they're done in a constructive and friendly way.

So please don't be offended and just consider if I could be trying to help us all and you give my suggestions a try.

(there's no need to reply to my suggestion, I'm not debating you, I'm trying to help everyone here.)

First, it was in OT before it was in general gun discussion(not that it really makes a difference). Second, since when does this forum have an issue with shutting down FUD? Third, I'm not the hostile one posting paranoid nonsense but apparently I'm the one who needs to "relax a bit"? Pointing out that claims of your SSN being in the magstripe as bull**** isn't "getting in the last word". Seems I was right about this being like trying to explain to people that photographs don't steal your soul. If you're so concerned with what's on a mag stripe and won't believe anyone about what is or isn't there, then go check it out for yourself.

BTW, spent quite a large portion of the day walking around outside so far. You? Here it's hot, there's barely a breeze, and it sucks. Personally I'd rather be sitting in an air-conditioned office. But hey, why not make assumptions about what it is I'm doing after we've got one user making assumptions and attempting to talk crap about age. But I'm the one with the issue yet I've said nothing that wasn't specifically related to the topic at hand. Quick, someone make a comment about my height while we're at it or maybe what I had for lunch, since I'll just somehow be in the wrong even though ya'll are the ones that want to make it personal.

          Back on-topic...

Island View in Ventura will ask to see your license, if they don't recognize you. They generally then check it against their customer data base so they can make sure you've signed the range waiver (you know, don't shoot the other customers etc.). Never had mine scanned that I can recall.

Their policy is to hold your license while on the range if you are renting a gun from them, otherwise they don't seem to want it. If you hold a range membership then they pretty much leave you alone once they see your membership card. Oh, and if you go in on the last Friday of the month for the FREE Calguns shoot, they just wave you in and assign you a lane, no questions asked.

Question. Is Island View a rental range, and do they record that information your first time there? If so it's another correct assumption that the easy way to avoid ranges wanting info is to just avoid rental ranges.

They are indeed a Rental Range. The first time you go in, regardless of whether you are renting or not, there is paperwork to fill out and the waiver to sign (all done digitally now on an iPad). Name, address, age (no SSN that I recall though) along with some questions about how you found them and other demographics IIRC.

Probably a pretty safe assessment. I'm not a tin foil hat type, so I really am not concerned about it myself.

I haven't been in a few years, but Winchester Canyon in Santa Barbara (outdoors) used to want to hold some form of government issued ID while you were on the range too.

Now for a place like Target that really only needs your DOB for something, yeah it's dumb for them to swipe it(they really don't even need your actual DOB, they just need to enter something that shows you're above 18, 21, or whatever).
As a research starting point, Civil Code section 1798.90.1.:

                  (A) Would be the common use of it(buying booze, getting into a club, etc.), (B) would be why an FFL swipes it, (D) might be rental ranges required to have it as part of their policy(insurance reasons perhaps?).

Indoor range near me fills out some info off your ID, has you sign some paperwork, and holds onto your ID on a clipboard until you leave. Outdoor range near me just has your print and sign your name, without checking your ID. Neither has bothered me.

Since swiping your ID is the same as just writing down what's on the front of it, I don't really see the problem.

I like my range. Pay with cash for an annual membership; get a key to the gate. They have an email address for when it's time to renew.

Hey, if THX has chosen a neighborhood to live in where he is unable to shoot in freedom on BLM land then it is natural for him to defend the option he chooses. His life, his choices.

My lifestyle has no room for privacy invasion, no matter how inconsequential he deems it to be.

My choice of neighborhood allows me to utilize BLM. In the winter I can have a table and easy-up erected on BLM land in 30 minutes. 90-110 minutes in the summer.

                        thanks again, OP

The range I go to is run by the county of Santa Clara. $15 bucks CASH ONLY, all day. They do require you to sign a waiver, and issue you a litlle blue card. I've been there enough that the $15.00 is all they need from me. If asked, I would gladly show them the little blue card.
