That's interesting. They take you DL while you are shooting, I wonder if they scan your DL while you are shooting because I've never seen them do it in front of me? hmm

After all of that, you end up contradicting your entire post with yeah it's dumb for them to swipe it.I swear some of you guys are just paranoid over scanning the stripe on the DL.
What do you guys think is on it other than what's already on the front of it? One of the ranges in my area does that, you fill out the waiver and they enter your info. Next time you show up they swipe your DL hand you a target and tell you your lane, takes maybe 10 seconds. The other local range, doesn't matter how many times you've been there, you still need to fill out the stupid form every time with all of your info on it anyway.
Now for a place like Target that really only needs your DOB for something, yeah it's dumb for them to swipe it(they really don't even need your actual DOB, they just need to enter something that shows you're above 18, 21, or whatever).

I didn't contradict myself at all.
Target is a department store, not a shooting range. Target doesn't need anything other than to verify you're older than 21 to sell you some beer or whatever. Try actually reading what was posted instead of glossing over it next time(or do you really not see a difference between a store selling alcohol, and a range renting out a lane and possibly guns as well?).
M1NM also pointed out what should have been obvious. Manually entering the info into a computer or swiping it makes no difference if someone gets access to the computer to steal info. Sure, you can take a magnet to the stripe on the back of your ID. Guess what? If they end up typing in the info manually, all you've done is waste their time and yours.
This is like trying to explain to people that taking your picture doesn't steal your soul.Comment

Luckily, according to some people here, we live in a world where no person, company, criminal or government has EVER misused someone's personal information.
To anyone and everyone who thinks that ...
why don't you print out all your information right here and now?
you don't have to get to in depth, just the info that you think is on your license card reader strip because it's not a big deal, right?
or are you "paranoid"?
I don't mean to pick on you but if someone is concerned about an issue and you're not, you don't have to put them in the paranoid / tin foil wearing category, just be happy you live a carefree life.
Edit: ok I found the information that is on or believe to be on state IDs, so just print out this for us and post photos of your face and fingerprints and don't forget your social security number. thank you and I appreciate you not being paranoid.
"This includes the driver's name, address, date of birth, physical attributes, medical impairments and donor information. Also states may include (** you see States really don't normally say what is entirely embedded on the strip probably because they're just too shy and don't like to talk, right? ) a compressed image file of the driver's photo and signature. Sometimes states will included additional information that is not printed on the license in the barcode like a Social Security number, face recognition template or digital fingerprint."Last edited by sealocan; 10-04-2015, 3:28 PM.Comment

So what's the difference if someone scans the mag stripe, types in, or writes down the info? I'm still waiting for someone to explain that. If swiping the mag stripe is the issue and not taking down the info, then yes you're are being paranoid and need to take off the tinfoil hat. Hell, even as allpoint mentioned, at whatever range he visits they just take your DL while you're shooting, how do you know someone isn't grabbing info? But at least they didn't swipe itLuckily, according to some people here, we live in a world where no person, company, criminal or government has EVER misused someone's personal information.

we don't want to miss anything.)

Why do they need any of that info?So what's the difference if someone scans the mag stripe, types in, or writes down the info? I'm still waiting for someone to explain that. All they need to know is if you are old enough.
They don't need my name, address, date of birth, or driver's licence number. Hand copied or scanned, it's info they don't need to collect.Comment

okay if you don't think there's a big difference between the two just print out the things that you wouldn't normally write down on a form or in the rare case that you submitted to be photocopied or held.
so that would be all your medical disabilities, your social security, and some photos of your fingerprints etc.
if you don't you seem kind of hypocritical. Please don't take this the wrong way but I think its people who keep allowing intrusions into our privacy (and criticizing other people who don't want that this happen) that ultimately allows more and more intrusions.
please make your next post the requested information that you don't seem to think is private or your argument is invalid.Comment

And when it's a range that has waivers, there's really a couple options.
1. Issue cards. Personally I find these annoying after 2 or 3 in your wallet.
2. Have shooters sign the waiver and paperwork every time. Also annoying.
3. Swipe a DL and see that you already signed the waiver and haven't been previously kicked out for being a nimrod.
Easiest way to avoid it? Don't go to ranges that rent. It's easier for a range to have staff follow one set of procedures, than 2.
Elsolo posted something to discuss, you know, actually having a conversation about the topic. You're stuck on posting nonsense if you don't see the difference between posting info from a DL on calguns, vs. swiping a DL at the range. Furthermore, you apparently can't be bothered to notice that the topic is about swiping mag stripes on DLs, which not every range that actually records information does... plus if you're happily handing over your DL even if they aren't entering info(handing your DL over to a random stranger and hoping they don't do something with it), then you are indeed paranoid since you apparently really don't give a damn about your info. If you don't want to actually participate in the discussion, you could just.. leave?okay if you don't think there's a big difference between the two just print out the things that you wouldn't normally write down on a form or in the rare case that you submitted to be photocopied or held.

edit: While I've never been to the range that the OP is discussing, I'd be willing to bet that they rent.Last edited by Merc1138; 10-04-2015, 3:50 PM.Comment

Merk, I'm just sharing my point of view and I just think you're could be wrong on this one issue.
it's also important to note that even if I'm right, things won't change and I'm pretty sure more invasions into our privacy are in store in the future.
I just always expect the "what difference does it make?"(I've got nothing to hide.) attitude and insulting others beliefs about privacy to come from someplace else and not our community here where we struggle every day to maintain the rights that we were born with.Comment

wth are you talking about? As I've said a couple of times now, typing in, writing down, and swiping your ID amount to the same thing(so does leaving your DL with someone else). At no point did I say that simply being concerned about your privacy means someone is paranoid.Merk, I'm just sharing my point of view and I just think you're could be wrong on this one issue.

"I swear some of you guys are just paranoid over scanning the stripe on the DL."
and then I proceeded to show you there are more things that are on the Swype than on any written form or photocopy of an ID.
You don't seem to understand that so that's okay.Comment
