I think that's an optimistic view of what he said, but one thing really stands out to me and makes me think it obvious he's going to exploit this event as a push for gun control and that's his emphasis on no other developed nation dealing with similar events.

What's the ONE fundamental thing that separates the United States from every other developed Western nation in the world?

I think that's a bit optimistic. For the most part protections keeping dangerous people from purchasing and possessing firearms are already in place. Actually treating and linking mental illness to the misuse of firearms is going to be expensive and a long process that wont get immediate results.

Contrast that with the low hanging fruit of pleasing your donors and voting base by putting in place more regulations on firearms regardless of whether or not those regulations are rational, much less effective.

The main question should be (to our elected leaders) is why Americans feel the urge to kill, NOT what they use to do the killing. We need to change the attitudes in this country, address the mental health issues and failures of parts of our society who look at each other as enemies and not fellow Americans.

Until we change the hearts of people, we will continue to have this type of violence, big or small, no matter what they Ban or what laws they pass.

Yeah, but we're talking about nations on par with us to at least some degree, not lawless third world **** holes. Compare the US to similar countries on your map and we're pretty high up there (holy **** though, what's going on in Greenland?)

Look at it that way and contrast it with the Progressives' all around agenda and I think it's obvious what direction they're going to take this.

I disagree with this assertion. Mental illness is just that an illness, often reflecting serious cognitive abnormality caused by physical imbalances and abnormalities in brain function. The idea that society causes mental illness is a fallacy. Mental illness is present in every society. How we deal with it differs from society to society, but it will never be eliminated.

I think our homicide rate compares pretty favorably to other countries that experienced mass genocide of the indigenous population in the last 300 years; experienced mass slavery in the last 200 years; endured prolonged civil war in modern times; was settled in the last 200 years largely by immigrants from many different countries who in many cases had to carve out a civilization from an untamed wilderness; and remains highly heterogeneous with regard to ethnicity, nationality, race and religion.

Which is to say the US has very little in common with the Western European countries to which it is often compared, and far more in common with our Western Hemisphere neighbors, most of which suffer horrific rates of violent crime.
