And even if a .50 BMG had been used in a crime, so have crock pots and ball bearings by those scumbags in Boston. So have handguns in the vast majority of all gun crimes. Have they banned crock pots and ball bearings yet? The entire mentality of "an item has been used in a crime by a criminal, ban it", is just a convenient excuse by Statists to disarm the populace. If only the uniformed masses could be made to understand that the tyrants don't care what is used, they just want to ban them all.

Does he not need to be a resident of California to be able to take possession of that firearm, and if so he needs to be brought to justice and prosecuted just like anyone else.

Kinda off topic but can I make my own tank? Or at least turn my car into one?

                  Did I miss something?

While he was harping on about the "untraceable!" aspect a little too much, I thought he was mostly reserved in his judgment about the building from 80% lowers. I got out of this that he was out to document his journey into building an actual AR15. Despite the title that it was easy to do so, plainly reading the article you get the sense it wasn't easy at all (took him 3 tries and also a bloody hand), and also it took a buttload of money to buy all the equipment. Kind of makes people reading it realize that if someone really wanted to commit a crime, why would they go through all the effort and money just so it's "untraceable"?

Just from reading the article, I didn't think he came off as much of an asshat as the rest of you (only just a little :P), but then again I didn't listen to his interview either that some of you mentioned. If anything, I hope this article adds interest for all the tech guys who enjoy building computers, that maybe they can get started in building ARs.

You know, let me take a step back on what I said earlier.

It would have been illegal if he had taken the gun back home to New York, because that would have been no different than any other case of going out of state to acquire a gun and have it cross state lines without going through an FFL.

Because this gun never actually crossed state lines ... I'm not sure that it would have been illegal. He made it and surrendered it without crossing any state lines. He's arguably okay on that score.

Heard an interview about it. It cost him a little over $2200 to make his crappy AR, not counting his man hours. I think criminals and terrorists would rather just by one on the blackmarket?

German online 'zine comments on the article and uses my photograph as an illustration! Ra!

And for the sake of the argument you travel to say Wyoming to your cabin for a hunt and while there decide to build your rifle. I know it's a bit of a stretch and not the same thing he did but technically speaking what law is being broken? Considering only the fact that you assembled something out of legally owned and purchased parts.
That would make you a dual state resident. So for the time you are in WY you are a WY resident under federal law at least.

He ends with getting a receipt showing that 3 more dangerous guns were removed by the police. What happened to the business end of that thing? Did he sell the upper for mommy Jean money?
