We donate the lock and ring you up for a Lock at a $0 charge on the invoice. We then have a sign that says 'donate unwanted CA DOJ locks here' which people drop locks they don't want into at a later time.

There is no law that says you have to purchase the lock for a certain price, the store can choose to donate one to you and you can then donate a lock back to them on your next visit.

You have got to be kidding me. Exactly how much profit do you think we make a $ 5.95 lock?

The place I am talking about charged me 11 bucks, and 11 to the fellow cgunner that I traded firearms with.

Maybe 5 or 7 PPT's a week (I am guessing, not sure how many PPT"S on average are done at a FFL), thats about 28 a month, so that is about an extra 200 to 300 a month from not selling (well gun locks that will probably never sell anyway) or giving up anything but time to enter the data in the computer which is mandatory anyway if you want to be a FFL.

11 bucks might not mean much to you, but for me that is a really good meal I could have had or a box of ammo I could have bought or a quick car wash, lol.

Not anymore. Last month I PPT'd a gun at Ammo Bros and the new owner was forced to buy a new lock. I couldn't give him one. I was told it "had to be purchased at the time of transfer and put on the receipt."

They are IDIOTS. There is no law mandating a purchase of a lock if you have a safe. Of course, there is a FEDERAL law (not California like you seem to think) which makes it mandatory for a lock to accompany a handgun at the time of transfer. So, if the FFL actually knows the law, they can accept the safe affidavit to comply with CA law and allow you to bring in any old gun lock you have (no receipt required) to leave the store with. Unfortunately, too many FFLs just don't have the cranial capacity to understand this. Instead, they simplify it and just require that you buy a lock to comply with both laws at once.

I have some brand new gun locks still in their sealed packaging... I have Excel and Photoshop... I have a printer...

Conceivably I could come up with a great looking receipt. Hell why not a private bill of sale with a date on it?

My wife could sell me a new gun lock today, give me a hand-written receipt for it and I expect I should be able to use that just fine to satisfy the requirement.

Although I can imagine the folks at Target Disasters wouldn't go for it...

I've bought 3 handguns this past year and haven't had to buy a single lock!

I always bought my locks at big 5 then returned them. All the ones I got that I did not have to pay for I used a Christmas tree ornaments.

I thought all handguns comes with a gun lock? I have about 10 off roster handguns which I SSE'ed in the past few years and they all included gun locks.
