How much ammo ?

No such thing as too much ammo, just continue to buy as you can afford, to tuck away for the next dry spell (ammo shortage), which is always a matter of when, not if.
How long did the 2013 shortage last? 10-12 months?
Reloading is the ultimate solution, methinks, as I do nearly all of my ammo (and have been since 2013), I've got probably 10,000+ assorted 9mm, .40, .45 brass each (which I've been saving for years, despite only handloading rifle cartridges prior to Sandy Hook panic), and about 3-4 years worth of various powder... weakest link for me currently is primers and bullets.Comment

For pistol, I'd say thats a very comfortable amount. I like to have 10 (at least) magazines for each pistol.
I like to also have multiple firearms per round. If you only have 1 9mm or 1 45, get another pistol
Id be more concerned with rifle ammo. But once again, magazines are important.Comment

It's not as simple as "x rounds is enough". It depends on how much you shoot in a given period of time.
As a minimum, I recommend that you keep at least a years' supply on hand. This is based on your normal shooting patterns, and should be pretty easy to figure out, although you may have to adjust upward if you predict that you will start shooting more rounds.
This allows you to ride out any shortages or market price spikes.
You should also, as a minimum, keep your "natural disaster or other emergency" contingency ammo on hand. This number is entirely arbitrary, and may consist of one box of hollow points, or may be a much larger amount. If you are getting ready for a couple of days without power or water after an earthquake, and think you may have to warn off a few looters, then that may be sufficient. If you think that what you see in shows like "Falling Skies" or "The Walking Dead" are likely scenarios, you will want to have whole buildings full of ammo (and a means of transporting it in bulk).
After that, think of expanding to a two year supply, or maybe three. You need to think about your own storage capacity, as well.
Then, you can always continue to buy more when the market price and your financial situation allows you to do so.
Keep in mind that it actually is possible to have "too much" ammo. I know a guy who has tens/hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo, but can't afford to rent a place with enough space to store the ammo.. He is rapidly approaching the point where he will need to start selling some of his ammo to pay the rent on the space where he stores the rest of his ammo.Last edited by retiredAFcop; 03-21-2015, 2:51 PM.Comment

If your ammunition supply will NOT make the 6pm news should the police raid your house, then you don't have enough.Custom made Tail Gunner Trailer Hitch for sale.

My general rule is that the only time you have too much ammo is when you are swimming or on fire.
I keep about 4 months of competition ammo loaded and 2 or 3 five gallon buckets of brass in various states of prep.sigpicComment

Just buy a good box of SD ammo (gold dot, HST, blah blah, etc.) , test fire exactly 4 rounds for reliability. Then set the other 46 rounds next to the dusty gat hiding behind the dusty sport coat you bought for your company's Xmas party back in '04. Then, 5 years from now when you remember you own a pistol, and feel you don't really need it, afterall, your home has never been invaded. You can sell it to me for 100 under what you paid for it and feel good about the deal because you got extra green money to take your ol lady yardsaleing out in Pacoima.Comment

I read on one of those prepper blogs that recommended 20 mags per rifle and 10 mags per pistol. For pistol, I'd say thats a very comfortable amount. I like to have 10 (at least) magazines for each pistol.
I like to also have multiple firearms per round. If you only have 1 9mm or 1 45, get another pistol

Only issue is the price and availability of certain magazines. Sig and HK mags are expensive (and right now hard to find, blocked or factory 10 rounder). For the Glock, S&W etc, it's quite easy to stock mags on the cheap. You can give peace a chance...

I suspect even a couple of hundred rounds would be reported as "hundreds of rounds" in the news. They would make that a sensational story, and it would not be nearly enough. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
