Running the serial is not going to link a firearm to a crime. Only a ballistics test can accomplish that.

Yes it can. Say somebody robs a house - homeowner draws a gun, but still gets killed. Robber runs off with gun. Now the homeowner's gun is a known crime gun. How often does that happen? I don't know, probably not a lot, but I'll ask again - Is this gun so nice that it's worth the risk? I'm guessing it's a POS banged up no-name .380.

If there is no standing for the weapon to be retained, it's going to be returned.

If you're aware of an instance (and since you've spoken inclusively of all 1911's "turned into the man" I hope that you can cite a corresponding large number of instances) where a LE agency has refused to return a weapon where they lacked a source of legal standing to keep it, please cite the particulars.

I once got to see a 1911 that a police agency was "holding" for someone that I knew. Both magazines and the Millet sights were missing from the weapon, they had some how disappeared while in police custody.

Pretty much been covered but the steps *I* would take in this situation are:

Go to local LE and fill out a "Found Property Report". The LE Agency will take possession of the firearm, check it against any reported stolen guns or those believed to have been used in a crime. After 60 days, if no one has claimed the firearm and it isn't being sought be LE for investigative reasons, you can claim the item. The item will then have to be voluntarily registered in your name. As said previously, 19 bucks and an a form and you're done.

After reading through the whole thread, there is something shady about this whole situation. I'm sure in due time the plot twist will arise.
