    Found a gun

So I was going through some boxes at my house, left by the previous owner. Years after I already lived here.

I found a handgun, neglected and dirty.

I'd like to register it into my name. And take possession legally .

What are the step I would need to take to make this happen.

You bought the house and legally own the contents. What year did you buy it?

I would assume its yours to keep as long as it wasn't reported stolen.

What? Why? It wouldn't work anyway.

Fill out a VOLREG form, send $19, call it a day. Congrats on the find.

                  You got me there.

I was thinking transfer instead of voluntary reg.

                    Ok update,

I posted this question for a friend,
Who NOW tells me he rents and does not own the home.

I assume everything is the same but has to ask/ inform the property owner.
After the owner says he doesn't own this gun. Then my friend can claim it.??

                    Sorry for the misdirection.

No, doesn't work that way, it's not a bicycle. Pretty sure he needs to report it found to the cops. Cops will try to return it to the lawful owner, if they can't. then he can DROS it as his own.

Your friend doesn't know where it's been anyway... The cops may be looking for that gun...

something doesn't sound quite right here, or maybe it's just me. Even way back when I was renting I didn't leave boxes left by the previous tenant just sit untouched for a couple years, before looking or contacting the property owner/manager.

                          Good find!

Pretend you didn't tell anybody about it and stash it away for a rainy day. Unregistered guns can be useful in a never-going-to-happen-but-you'll-be-glad-you-had-it situation.

                            1. Person that finds it turns it into LE agency. Needs to inform that if no one claims it, he wants it.

                            2. If it is not contraband (stolen, crime gun, etc) and no one claims it in 90 days, can go back to LE agency and claim it.

You can't buy a gun as part of a real estate transaction. The transfer of firearms in California has to be done by an FFL, not a realtor.

The firearm is "found property" in the home that you purchased. Penal Code section 485 (Theft of Found Property) requires you to make reasonable efforts to locate the owner. Since nearly all firearms are serialized, and there is a database of firearms registrations available to LE, this would translate into a requirement for you to notify LE of your find.

Additionally, if the firearm is worth more than $100.00, you're specifically required to turn it over to LE. Please refer to Civil Code section 2080.1

If the LE agency is unable to locate the owner, then you are able to claim the firearm under the provisions of Civil Code 2080.3 (and expect the agency to require you to process the transfer through an FFL).
If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.
