First:
"So I was going through some boxes at my house, left by the previous owner. Years after I already lived here.
I found a handgun, neglected and dirty."
Then:
"I posted this question for a friend,
Who NOW tells me he rents and does not own the home."
Just not passing the smell test."Hence it happened that all the armed prophets conquered, all the unarmed perished." - Niccolo MachiavelliComment

I love how contacting the old home owner was never even a thought for you

If it were me, I'd take it (in a locked container) to the police station, and report it as a found gun. With most found property, the police will let you come back and have it after a certain amount of time has passed without being claimed. I'm guessing that with a firearm, they'd likely destroy it if they couldn't find the owner, but this sounds like a FAR better option than ending up in a situation where an officer finds it, runs it's serial, finds that it's connected with a triple homicide from 10 years ago, and arrests you while you're screaming "But it's not mine, I just FOUND it!" Is it REALLY that nice of a gun that it's worth the risk? Also, this whole story smells like BS.Comment

OK..............

Running the serial is not going to link a firearm to a crime. Only a ballistics test can accomplish that.If it were me, I'd take it (in a locked container) to the police station, and report it as a found gun. Then:
