Nice letters to both the management of the store explaining your position and that you would like to shop there again and the PD commending the officers for their professionalism (if you think they were). And a letter to the Chief and City Attorney asking them to educate all the officers on the carry laws so that a 20 second 12031e check doesn't turn into an unconstitutional 30 min+ detention for no cause.

And carry (this is mandatory in my book) your tape recorder AND brochures!

False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.

So, the mall rent-a-cop is an agent of the mall, NOT ANY OF THE MERCHANTS! This is exactly what I was told many years ago, when I was a mall rent-a-cop. The mall rent-a-cop does not have the right to detain you. Also, in this case we are refering to UOC, not possible theft. I don't see how a merchant could (or, would want to) detain anyone for UOC.
