Wildlife on the range?

Have seen deer, quail, turkeys, and even a pig at the range. Personally I don't hunt, but several shooters said that the pig was quite a temptation.

I was shooting my scoped HK up at Burro Canyon maybe five or ten years ago, during a string, suddenly I couldn't see my target.

A doe wandered in and was standing right in front of my target stand.

I motioned to the RO, who had to chase it away several times with a bullhorn.

I almost accidentally shot her, the trigger on my SR9T is very light.

Wild Turkey walk across the ranges at USI often. During firing periods!!!

One time at Spenceville, we had a Cow jump the short fence on one side of the range (the range sits between two grazing fields) and cross the entire range and then jump the fence on the other side to get to a different herd.


At the private range I shoot at regularly we get jack rabbits and squirrels running around down range all the time. No casualties yet.

In Oakdale I have seen deer crossing the range while they are trap shooting. The deer did not seem in a hurry.

Dumbass turkeys and deer used to mosey up to the target stands during Basic at Ft. Knox all the time.

Depending on whether or not there was an officer present dictated what our Drill Sergeants would do and them being a bunch of Kentucky good ol' boys would more often than not take a couple of our weapons and open fire. That's where I learned that 5.56 was an insufficient deer hunting round and that even though you have four M240B's laying automatic fire all over a family of deer, it doesn't guarantee that you're going to hit a single one of them before they run off into the woods.

Yup, I've had a covey of mountain quail walk by our bay when up at burro; also had a flock of dove make me lose concentration and miss on the trap range, of course it was after hitting the first 20 clays and on my way to perfection.

Happens in Escondido too at the Fish & Game. I watched 3 turkeys walk down the backstop directly above the targets during an IDPA match..... yep during live fire!

Happens a lot!

Wildlife wandering into the shooting lanes happens a lot over at the Los Altos Rod and Gun range.

There is a ceasefire whenever a critter larger than a bunny wanders into the range. It usually a bunch of deer that causes the ceasefire.

There are a lot of rocks and dirt clods that the RSO's use to chase the deer away. These deer are so tame, one time, they came up to the RSO who had a rock in his hands ... it looked like the deer thought the RSO was going to feed it! Instead the officer flung the rock at the deer and hit it on its side and it ran away.

I also see a ton of birds and bunnies out on the 100 yard range ... they flit and eat stuff while rifle rounds are buzzing over their heads.

If you shoot any wildlife there ... you will get immediately expelled. The fire control officer, (up in a little hut on an overlook), can see everything on all the lanes.

I've hit a few birds at Rahauges skeet range. I'm not sure how you can avoid it, it happens.

Deer cross the range often at Angeles, sometimes a Yote as well. Hawks are common as well. It amazes me the amount of dipsticks that fire at them before being warned by the RO's. Once someone clipped a doe on the 400 yard line, LEOs arrived and did not take it lightly on some dummy

There was a thread about it here. I recall one of the thread participants was pretty sure he knew who did it; guy packed up pretty quick after the shooting.

Don't remember hearing about the instance The Exiled mentions, since it sounds like they caught the guy.

I understand the charge would be felony poaching: no guns for you, forever.

A guy down at the west end packed up and jumped the fence and left. We thought it might be him.

Heard back at Metcalf range in San Jose that somebody shot a animal, and the rangemasters detained everybody at the range for the rest of the day until they were interrogated by the park ranger.
