I just purchased the much-maligned Remington 887 Tactical shotgun at an LGS (by now, I have hopes that Remington has worked out the bugs). The LGS owner then proceeded to tell me not to buy shotgun ammo at Walmart. Something about Walmart's demand for cheap ammo from the various manufacturers forces them to use inferior components so that they can still make a profit. Is this a self-serving argument on the LGS owner's part, or is there at least some basis in fact?

Walmart shotshells inferior?

The Walmart where I buy my shotgun ammo from carries mostly Federal/Estate (same company really) and Winchester. These come in a variety of models/loads etc. There are however, 2 types that I know of that are exclusive to Walmart:
- Winchester Universal value pack. These come in black boxes and is packaged in a 4-box package (100 shells total). Loaded for 12 or 20 gauge, 1 1/8oz of #7.5 or #8 birdshot and 1200fps.
- Federal multipurpose. Comes in brown/black boxes. These also come in a 4-box package like Winchester Universal. They cost a little more. Also loaded for 12 or 20 gauge, 1 1/8oz of #7.5 or #8 birdshot and 1200fps.
I don't know the reason why your LGS advised against buying these, I've shot thousands of them (majority being the cheaper Winchester Universal) in my shotgun (a Benelli Supersport 12 gauge) and had only 1 defective round, which was a Winchester Universal. It fired but the load was very light, there was very little recoil and the action didn't cycle. Clay still broke though so I didn't mind all that much.
The Remington 887, being a pump action shotgun, should basically work with any shotgun shells that is of the correct gauge and shell length. If I were you, I'll ignore the recommendation and buy some to try out for yourself.Comment

FUD. Wallymart has no say in how ammo is manufactured (or at least I hope they don't). He was probably trying to get you to buy shells from him. Nothing wrong with supporting a local gun store, but sometimes the mark up on ammo can sting a bit.Originally posted by POLICESTATEAmericans who seek to take away liberty and property from others are not true Americans. I seldom buy ammo from Walmart because they always seem to be out of stock. A lot of trap shooters I know like the Value Packs as they are cheaper than handloads. I like the Remington Sport Load Value Packs over the Federal and Winchester but I haven't seen these at my local Walmart in over a year (that Remington hull is great for handloading, btw.) I did buy a few boxes of Federal Gold Medal Papers from Walmart last year just because they are the best smelling shotgun shells around (if you're old enough to remember pre-plastic hulled shot shells you'll know what I mean) but since you're into HD ammo Walmart often has 15 round boxes of Winchester Super X or Remington Express unbuffered 00 buck for about $12 the last time I saw any, and that's a real deal for buckshot. Estate buckshot (00 & 4B) in 25 round boxes for $20 is another good deal but I've seen those at Cabela's more than anywhere else. The ones in the green box is, IIRC manufactured in the USA while the white box Estate is euro made. I have seen the white box stuff at Walmart, but I prefer buying USA if at all possible.
With center fire ammo, I dislike Walmart's exclusive Federal made Champion line, but that's my preference and you (or your gun) might like the stuff (I don't.)Comment

Walmart is a big enough buyer that they could, conceivably, have Federal and Winchester manufacture a 'Walmart' line of ammo. So far as I know the 100 round bulk packs are a Walmart only thing. if they did this Winchester or Federal could very well use components of lesser quality than in their normal line. I wouldn't be surprised if there was more out of round shot, more clumped shot, more variation in powder charges and therefore more variation in velocity than the ammo that is not destined for Walmart bulk packs.
That being said, there's nothing wrong with the ammo if you are using it for practice or something, it's just not going to be as high performance as some other ammo. I don't hunt with it, but I know people that do.Calguns.net, where everyone responding to your post is a Navy Force Delta Recon 6 Sniperator.Comment

I have one gun that doesn't like the federal value pack. One that doesn't like the winchester value pack. One that eats anything. And one that has some issues from time to time with everything. Just see what your gun likes.Originally posted by Marcus von W.Is that banjo music I hear?

Saturday I shot a 100 box of Winchester universal game and target out of my remington 1100 and mossberg 500 12 gauge with no problems paid 26$ per box.Comment

I stopped reloading the 12/20ga because the Walmart stuff is cheap and the time saved!
I have competed with ALL brands of the value packs from Walmart, they all worked great in my guns.Wanna learn to shoot SKEET? I am here to introduce all shooters to the sport of SKEET Shooting ....
