There is definitely a wide range of quality of shot shells--just like ammunition for any firearm. Some is better made from quality components and better quality control. Some ammunition does not even reliably fire.

In the case of the inexpensive shot shells at Walmart, they seem to work reliably although some people have ejection problems with some as mentioned above. Inexpensive shot shells probably won't pattern as well or as consistently as higher quality shells. For example, serious competitors will not likely be using Walmart promotional loads.

All that said, for the average shooter, they will perform fine. If you are happy with the few loads offered in those shells and they work for you, go for it. For most shotgunners, a slightly less than optimal pattern is the least of our shooting issues. Yet many beginning shooters may benefit from lighter loads not available in promotional loads.

When it comes to shot shells I've determined it's the gun and not the ammo.

Okay, but the bigger question is: what Costco sells shotshells???!

Not sure they carry shot shells yet.

I have had problems with the walmart winchester not wanting to eject from my 870. when i was at escondido fish and game a few of the trap shooters i was shooting with said that they had seen problems with the walmart ammo being a tad over sized and causing ejection problems.

Try an experiment with the next 100 pack Federal or Winchester bulk pack. Randomly take 10 shotshells from each pack. Stack them up standing next to each other and look at their rims, crimps and hull sizes. Uniformity isn't on their QC checklist.
But, they are reliable enough and I do buy a lot of them. They continue to run in my semi autos (knock on wood). For those who rely on every round to absolutely chamber and fire, those dudes running Remington Nitros.

Newer 870's are known to have problems with some of the Wal-Mart available shells. It's due to the rough machine finish of the chamber and can be polished out. There is a thread http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/a.../t-344897.html

I haven't had any problems with the Walmart value pack shotshells in my Win 1300 or either of my Escort semis one in 12G and other in 20G.

My buddy had issues with it in his 870Express but solved them by swapping in a Wingmaster extractor.

I've shot over 10k through my 11-87....99% ammo bought from walmart. Either my 11-87 is the best shotgun ever made or I been really lucky.

                    I say buy from walmart.

I try to stay away from the Winchester rounds it jams in my 870 too. Federal rounds work pretty good.

My brother's 930 doesn't like the Winchester Universal from WM (FTE). The Federal MP no issues so far... Perhaps his 930 still breaking in...

Funny how people say FUD (I forgot what that means but I know it's not good).
If you think for one second that Walmart doesn't cut a deal with the manufactures to produce inferior ammo to keep prices down then your in la la land. Of course they do. I've heard this for years. Nothing wrong with it except it's not quality. Think of it as Harbor Freight ammo;-) You get what you pay for.

I never once had an issue with WalMart value packs. It's all made by Winchester and Federal and both are reputable cartridge manufacturers. That's not to say they don't run into issues from time to time. In fact, Winchester recently recalled a bunch of their .22lr ammo because of double-charges, but that's more of an error rather than quality control issues.

Not only is that an error, it's a huge QC issue as well...
