Educate me on slug rounds please

So what kind of slug rounds do you use for home defense?

I'm assuming that rifled slug rounds need to be used in a rifled barrel... correct?

If I don't have a rifled barrel, what kind of slug round am I looking for? Is anything that doesn't say "rifled" ok?

I have plenty of 00 buck, but want to have a mix of slugs too.

    Thanks.

would not be the first time I got it wrong...

was looking at some Hornaday SST slug rounds and it said "rifled barrel"... don't remember if they were sabot slugs or not

so "non-sabot" slugs should be ok?

If the barrel is smooth...... use a round where the rifling is on the slug. I use "Federal Low Recoil Rifled Slugs" through my Rem 11-87P (smoothbore).

I had a rifled barrel shotgun, saboted slugs are pricey.

Sabot slugs are typically 3-4 times the price of rifled slugs.

Winchester claims that it's Rackmaster slugs are for both smoothbore and rifled barrel. I have a bunch but haven't had a chance to try them in my barrels (18.5 inch rifled and 28inch smoothbore). Thus far I've been shooting Buckhammers and Hornady SST from the rifled.

For rifled slugs I've heard good things about the Federal Tru-ball slugs. They are normally about $3-4 a box as I recall.

What about if the shotgun is capable of shooting slugs?
                I have a 870 express with the 28" barrel.
It has no stamping stating "improved cylinder" or anything, would it be safe to shoot rifled slugs out of it?

if the shotgun is capable of using rifled slugs, i reccomend nothing other than federal tactical low recoil slugs with truball.

they are hands down most accurate, most reliable, and easiest handling HD slug loads on the market.

the standard truballs are good, but the tactical model is superior for Home Defense. lower velocity, larger HP opening in the slug. Here's what it looks like; about 3-5 dollars a box.

shouldnt be a problem. Just avoid shooting rifled slugs out of a rifled bore.

Wouldn't it depend on his choke? I don't think I want to put a slug through a full choke.

If the barrel has threaded choke tubes, the tube will govern.

Otherwise, you may need to remove the barrel to see the choke marking.

The bbl is threaded for choke tubes.
I have in the choke tube that came with it.

On mine, there is no choke. 18.5" smooth bore barrel.

So it sounds like rifled slugs are ok, am I correct?

What about Federal Hydra-Shock Slugs? Are those OK in a smoothbore or worthless?
