One of the guns that I have on standby for home defense is my Benelli Nova Tactical w/tube extension to hold 7 rounds. First off, I run an empty chamber just to be absolutely sure of no negligent discharges. I am aware of the cons, but I live in a decent neighborhood so the chances are I would have a ND before I actually needed to use the shotgun. Not to say its not possible, but my AR15 would probably be the first thing I grabbed (equipped with a light, etc). The first two shells to chamber would be 3" Winchester Supreme 15 pellet 00 Buckshot, and the next five are Federal Tactical 00 Buckshot with flight control. Then on the side saddle I have four shells of Winchester 2 3/4 segmenting slugs. What do you guys run in your HD shotgun?

Home Defense Loadout

when I used to have my mossberg 500 with a 6 round magazine I ran 3 loads of #8 target and 3 loads of 00 buckshot.
My main concern was over penetration, but if I had to go more than 3 rounds then at that point I would have bigger concerns.
I don't intend to shoot through doors/walls to get the intruder in any case.
At some point I plan on getting a 12 gauge double barrel coach gun. I don't think I'd put the buckshot in it, but I would go for something with bigger shot than #8.
Interested in these segmenting slugs though, I should check those out
Couple of those in a coach gun could make for a very effective HD gun but again one of my major concerns is over penetration.

Well my logic is that the only time I would fire would be in defense of myself or others. So #8, though it sounds safe for overpenetration, is a superficial type of wound, as opposed to a "manstopper". My house layout is such that 85% of possible scenarios would result in me shooting in a direction that nobody inhabits, and would go into the hillside if it managed to penetrate the walls.Comment

Yeah I agree, that was about 20 years ago though so since then I've learned a lot more about ammo, ballistics, effects on walls and such. Now my primary go-to gun is a 1911 loaded with Hornady CD hollow points. If I were to use my AR that has Hornady TAP.Well my logic is that the only time I would fire would be in defense of myself or others. I checked out the segmented slugs in a couple of places, interesting concept. I think a pair of those in a double-barreled shotgun would be great. Too bad we can't have SBS in this state, would become my primary as soon as I got the tax stamp
Maybe one day if I ever move to a free state.-POLICESTATE,

Haha amen to that. I'm there with you on the TAP in the AR15, seems like the best way to get maximum performance out of an AR in CQB situations. Don't want to have an FMJ or other tumbled out the otherside of the BG.Comment

Birdshot is for birds. Unless the person has feathers, don't bother. It rarely causes enough damage to stop somebody. I have heard enough stories from people who have actually used it on human beings to not put any faith in it. No matter what the internet tough-guys and couch commandos say. If you have decided that the situation warrants lethal force, don't dick around. You are trying to stop somebody. Not scare them off. If you are worried about walls, look at some of the reduced power "tactical" loads. Or look at a .223 loaded with 55 grain FMJs. Those come apart much more rapidly when they hit walls than almost any other round.

Thank you for bringing up this bit of reality as it's hardly ever mentioned. Most every post I see seems to be of the dilusion that there's 0% of an ND and a 100% chance of using it to off a bad guy within a week. Uh huh...Last edited by kb58; 11-07-2012, 6:30 AM.Comment

3" buckshot seems a bit overkill for HD to me. Short ranges, enclosed spaces and neighbors to think about negate using a 3" shell IMO. Especially if you live in a condo or townhouse. One of the guns that I have on standby for home defense is my Benelli Nova Tactical w/tube extension to hold 7 rounds. When I was in a townhouse, I selected a 21-inch "youth model" Remington 870 20 gauge loaded with Winchester #3 buckshotThere are 20 pellets in #3 buckshot, each one .25" diameter for a total of 468 grain projectile weight at 1200-1400 fps. That oughta leave a mark.Comment

Oh, I forget to mention what I use, as I was too busy bashing the birdshot. I have 4 shells of 2 3/4 inch Seller and Bellot #4 buckshot in a sidesaddle on the gun. I have found that it gives me a decent spread at HD ranges. I see no point in slugs, as that defeats the whole purpose of a shotgun in close quarters. If I am going outside to see what is making noise in the pastures, I would grab either the 00 buck or the slugs. But for in the house, or the immediate area around it, that much extra power and penetration just isn't needed. And truthfully, I am much more likely to grab a rifle than the shotgun. Better sights, better accuracy, less recoil, and as mentioned about, they are less likely to go through the walls.

PDX1 in the tube and side saddle. 12 rouds of PDX1 should stop anything. Also have two 10 round mags full PDX1 in 9mm.Comment

I have a benelli supernova, I had it loaded with centurion buck and ball but I live in a condo and that would go through 3 walls. I highly recommend you look into it, they are some good rounds. I ran about 50 of them just to see how they work in my gun and they ran fine. They have a good dispersion and seem to do their job well.Comment
