As I recall, I saw a 4-gun set in the Parazzi booth at the Shot show for $500,000 . . . they were lookers!

If you're interested, I'm pretty sure I know where to get a good deal..about $375,000.

I've only really used two different shotguns for trap shooting. Though it was on a trap range, it was informal.

I used a Win 1300 Speed Pump with a mod choke using Win Super X 7.5 birdshot.

I also used a Citori O/U range rental with house ammo--it was a trap load made in Spain with a blue hull. I seemed to be able to hit better with this set up including the harder shots.

I think next time I go to CV, I'll just rent a Citori again because it's fine for trap and it's a hoot to shoot.

A lot depends on the shooter. For standard trap (16 yards), a modified is fine. Some trap shooters use a full for just about everything.

For doubles, your first shot should be fast so a more open choke will work great and then a modified or tighter for the second shot.

As far as handicapped (20 - 27 yards) you will need a tighter choke. Usually a full, especially at the further distances. Additionally, some will use a little larger shot (7 1/2) for longer distances.

That said, most people worry too much about chokes and not enough about shooting fundamentals.

Anyway, I've got a Perazzi MX2000, Krieghoff K-80, and a Beretta 682. I paid a lot more than $2,000 for the stock on the Krieghoff.

FWIW, other than the first shot in doubles I use a full choke.

If one is truly serious about the game, then both of those bits of wisdom are absolutely spot on.

But then the same could be said, to varying degrees of expense, for any shooting game. I know when I was shooting PPC a couple of decades ago my entry level gun was pretty darned expensive or sure seemed to be. Same with full on race guns.

Serious clays shooting is, though, at a whole different level of wallet busting.

Oddly enough, the first 25 straight at the 16 yard line on trap, I managed with Improved cylinder. If you get on them fast and you know your gun, IC will work just fine. Most people use anything from Modified up to Full. It's really personal preference.

If he wants to become a better shooter he will use full. Granted not every "full" is the same amount of constriction. For example Browning Invector chokes are more open than the norm. The mod is more of a light mod and the full is more of a mod. Briley's tend to run pretty tight to the way they are labeled. I have an 870 TB Trap that came with three chokes, Full, Super Full and Extra Full. Without putting a mic on them the Full patterns like a mod and the Extra Full is just a bit more tighter than a traditional full.
Full chokes will show the shooter where they are at on the target which is important for the learning curve. Of course if the guy just wants to break the target anyway possible, any choke can do that..lol.

Not too long ago I had to use my OU for handicap from the 27 as my usual caps gun broke a firing pin. In the process I thought it would be interesting to use my bottom barrel which I only use for doubles and is fit with an IC. I was quite surprised to break 24 from the 27 with an IC and 1oz of 7.5s. The breaks were pretty solid too. Definitely not recommended but I gained a new appreciation for pattern density vs. choke selection.

This is how it was explained to me and yes, you can usually clearly tell where you hit the target. It will also get you dialed in to slamming them hard, which means you will fine tune your shooting to be a more precise shooter. The first time you see two guys go over 700 straight in a shoot off at the state shoot you'll understand why being precise is important and "just breaking them" is inadequate.

The only gun I have with choke tubes I bought used and it came that way. I wouldn't worry about such things if you were to get a dedicated trap gun.

Yes, I got my first 25's as well as a 50 and became Distinguished Expert with a Mossberg 500 and a fixed Modified choke. Well, MIGHT have switched to a ribbed barrel with a screw-in Improved Modified choke and added a tiny mid-bead to actually as I attained that...

Not necessary but doable.
