What kind of choke is generally used? Is it like a wide skeet choke or more like a modified choke?

A lot depends on the shooter. For standard trap (16 yards), a modified is fine. Some trap shooters use a full for just about everything.
For doubles, your first shot should be fast so a more open choke will work great and then a modified or tighter for the second shot.
As far as handicapped (20 - 27 yards) you will need a tighter choke. Usually a full, especially at the further distances. Additionally, some will use a little larger shot (7 1/2) for longer distances.
That said, most people worry too much about chokes and not enough about shooting fundamentals.
Not sure if this is helpful to you but there are some great trap and skeet brochures for beginners here: http://www.remington.com/pages/news-...downloads.aspxLast edited by AAShooter; 09-21-2010, 9:31 PM. -
I'm a noob at trap shooting but I have had some success. Last Sat I hit 23 out of 25 on my first round. I have experimented with Modified and Full choke and I do better with the Modified. I try to be quick on the bird and not let it get too far out.
I think AAShooter has a viable plan though, Full choke for the 20 &27 yard shots. We will do as we will do because I am me and you are you.Comment

Yes, I do mean at a normal field. Coyote Valley in my case.
I understand that knowing the fundamental is better, but I since I don't know much about shotgun shooting sports, I was surprised to find out that skeet, for example used a very open choke. So I just started to wonder about trap.sigpic

Trap average broken bird are at 36 yards. You tell us, what choke would you use for that range? U should learn enough to understand how to answer this question. But, OK...
Generally, Improved Modified with 8 shot if ya got 'em. Modified if u r fast on the target and try to use 9 shot. Full if u are a little slower but use 7-1/2 shot.

I generally use modified at 16 yards, although I've had very good results out to the 21 yard line with Improved Modified, both on my O/U. Any farther back than that it's Full, and I'll usually use an 1100 with a 30 inch fixed Full choke barrel at the farthest distances.
The flight of the targets on a skeet field demand a much more open choke. Skeet choke, Cylinder and even Improved Cylinder will all deliver good results assuming the shooter is doing his part.

If you are starting out and cutting your teeth on trap, just use the mod and leave it alone. If you have more experience or once you get a dozen rounds or more under your belt, switch to a full choke and NEVER look back. Trust me.Originally posted by fullrearviewI would by a prius and put a diesel engine in and tune it so black soot would just bellow out the back, and stop all traffic behind me while I drive through BerkleyComment
