Storing a Loaded Shotgun?
Collapse

The only thing ide do if I was loading up a shotgun and knew it was going to be loaded for term would be to replace it with a high quality wolff magazine spring. I dont know about the current factory mag springs they are using these days, but I've boughten 2 mossbergs in the past where the factory mag spring was such a piece of junk with tiny gauge wire the very first time I loaded it up, i tried to chamber a round the spring was all bound up and stuck in the tube, had to get long need nose pliers and pull it out and it was bound up when being depressed. The factory spring just felt so cheap. Replaced it with a wolff extra power +5 and it functions everytime even after long term storage loaded up."If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so." - Thomas JeffersonComment

Dimples are not a problem with the careful application of a dremel.870 Marine Magnum Police.
The stock tube holds six; I keep room enough to add a slug to position 1 in the tube for a select slug scenario.
You can easily find 870 magazine extensions with a number of on-line retailers that will work with your Express, provided the factory did not use a "limiter" dimple in the tube."I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Sure, it can happen if the paper hulled shell attracts enough moisture and sits for many years. Of course, the stuck shell will be the least of the problems since, the shotgun will probably be covered in rust, inside and out.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

I tend to keep my Remington model 870 shotguns in stock configuration, since I use them for sporting arms. Even if I have not been duck hunting in a while, one of them still has the shell limiter plug installed. I am aware of the aftermarket magazine tube extenders for Remington 870s capable of holding up to 8 rounds.870 Marine Magnum Police.

On my Mossberg 500 - it will hold 5 rounds in the stock magazine tube/ also the same for the Maverick model 88 shotguns. They will not accept aftermarket external magazine extensions for more than 5 rounds in the tube magazine.
Unless one gets the Mossberg/ Maverick factory configured 'home security', cylinder bore non-choke models that will hold up to 8 rounds.

Still with storing ammunition in a shotgun, I have never had a shotgun shell deform due to pressure from the follower and spring compressing against them over a long period of time.sigpicMember of the N.R.A., Marine Corps League, and American Legion.Comment

If it is on the Internet, it must be true (Calguns is Internet, isn't it?).
If it is on FB, it is 1000% true.
Sure, shells get "smushed" all the time after a short while in the chamber with the right mag spring, it allows you to load one more round. Very important for HD situation. Ask anyone here, they do it every time they use their gun for HD, at least once a month.
If you really want to prevent shell "smushing", you should unload your shotgun every morning and keep them in a special climate controlled container in a horizontal position.
BTW, don't forget to thoroughly clean your choke at least once a week. Otherwise you might get caught "with your pants down" next time you need to use your shotgun in HD situation
