I wouldn't consider a specialty trap model until you have your first 25 straight with a field gun. You'll know by then how serious you want to be on trap vs. other games, vs. strictly recreational.
You are right on with this!

there are many other games out there that are just as much or more fun then trap! I also shoot skeet, sporting clays and 5 stand, my first u/o was a CZ canvasback which I still use for skeet, has at least 15,000 rds thru it no hiccups, I don't see a beginner needing a high dollar dedicated trap gun, like a few others a nice field gun ( wether an o/u or semi auto will just fine) I shoot triple B's oaktree and moore /moore, would be more then happy to let op shoot some of mine!!

Not a sanctioned event as you know, hence the ???? There's various ways to "modify" sanctioned venues to increase the difficulty/hunting "reality". We used to do a "quail walk" on the skeet field. Meandering on the field and the puller pulled at his discretion. Most of that was before 5-stand, sporting clays, etc.

From a hunting perspective, if you don't have a good dog, shooting two ranging birds at substantially different angles often results in lost birds (should you connect).

OP, I've got a pump, semi auto, and over/under shotgun (actually a few of each) that you're welcome to try, free of charge.

              Let me know.

On pheasants, the first shot gets his attention, then the second shot tries to make sure he stays down. On doves, doubles are reasonable at 40+ yards, and they are easy to find on the sand. Chukars just piss me off.

Gotta like jagerdog's comment!! in reality sometimes we tend to over think things, instead of reacting, sometimes to much thought is not a good thing, with my group of shooters, sometimes we have the puller pull at his will with what ever target he wants, and you would be surprised how quick you are, and seem to hit the target better, good for hunting practice!!!
