To see if you like it, Rem 870 is a good choice. The Browning Trap is a cut above, but not as applicable to other games. Few shoot pumps anymore at games which have doubles.

Mossberg has the combos in the 500, it comes with 18" and 24/28" barrels. This is still relatively cheap and you can keep it and use it as home defense shotgun when you decided to upgrade.

The Big 5 version has a fixed modified choke. While fine for trap, it's not as versatile if you want to try other games. The Mossberg catalogue has screw in chokes on the combo.

Ditto. It's just like a Benelli with the exception of the spring being on the magtube instead of in the stock and without the price tag of a Benelli. Very nice Semiauto which is why I just got one myself. Don't get me wrong. Benellis are awesome shotguns. But the Franchi is a great midpriced semiauto for ones who are on a budget. Inertia shotguns are underated IMO.

For a beginner at trap you want a 30 inch ventilated rib barrel on a pump or semi-automatic or a 32-34 inch barrel on a break open gun.
Avoid all field stocks as you will raise your head and it will cost you birds and get you into bad habits.
The gun needs to feel comfortable to you and it needs to fit you.
The Remington 870 has taken home piles of trophies and so has the Remington 1100. Mel Helm lived 6 doors down the street from me and I used to shoot with Daro Handy from time to time.
They both shot remarkable trap with basic guns.
Dan Bonillas shot a Browning but they wouldn't sponsor him so he tossed it in a 55 gallon garbage drum at the state shoot in Martinez and signed on with Perazzi.
Find a gun that fits you in your price range and get shooting.
I used a thumbhole stocked Winchester model 12 to win a state title in 1980 and that gun fits me like a velvet glove.
I switched to a BT99 then a Franchi then a TM1 then a MX3 combo before quitting the game as a AA 26.5 yard shooter.
I still have all my model 12's but got rid of the others.

Rem 1100. Or early model Win Super-X. Either with a 28 or 30" barrel would work well. Both shoot much softer than a Rem 870. Both are available used in Trap model.

Times have changed Lynn. The 870 you and I shot back in the day is not the same gun today. It looks the same but it's not. It's a different gun and nothing has been improved. Few people shoot pumps but the Browning Trap pump is the entry point today (The BT-99 is more common actually). The automatics are owned by Beretta. My 28 gauge Beretta A400 is very sweet. I'd actually recommend starting with a 12 gauge Beretta automatic for all the clay sports then later get a dedicated trap gun.

Just get whatevershotgun you like. If your really looking to get into the sport of trap shooting you will be upgrading in the long run. If your looking for a gun to shoot clays every know and then. Get a 870 field pump or anything in that range if you have the cash you can find reminton 1187 semi’s for under $500. I should clays with my benelli M4 and rem 870 tactical with a red dot! However i do have a field over under which i do enjoy shooting clays with.

I shot at Petaluma for years with my father and was not happy to hear about its closing down. Lots of nice people there. I probably shot with Shortwing at some point.

I told KingAir just to pick up an old BT99 only to find out the price they are now getting for these guns. In the old days a shooter would shoot a horrible score then sell you his gun for $200 cash.
I guess that doesn't happen anymore.

omg! gotta love this thread! A good gun is a must, but really, you need to learn how to shoot what ever sport you are shooting! I can take a field gun of any gauge or model and shoot a decent score with it, its all about practice, doesn't matter whether a pump, semi auto or a o/u, but a pump would be my last choice just incase I would want to shoot other games
