You wouldn't be dragging anyone through the mud. I don't think anyone would blame a 40 year old gun from something breaking, but it would give us a better feeling what your options would be.

Mostly positive, but I don't really know for sure. I have no reason to think I made a mistake because the gun had been functioning fine that day through several dozen shots at pairs before it broke, but would like to understand the realm of possibilities here. Like what could I have done wrong?

You have to tell us the make and model 2 3/4 inch shells in a 2 1/2 inch chamber might do it
When you bought you did remove the barrel and check everything, right?

It is stamped 2 3/4 and I was using that length shell no doubt about it, I still have the 1/2 box which remains when it broke. The gun had basically been to the range weekly since I acquired it and maybe I put 600 total shells through it. Between each session the barrel was swabbed and oiled. I've had the bolt out once, and usually remove the barrel when I clean it. It still looks cherry through the bore.

Sixty days past the warranty on a used gun? That's on the buyer.

Too bad it broke, sounds like you had a lot of fun and got your money's worth out of it at the range. Re-barrel it and it could last another 40 years.

Woe be to he who relies on tape alone. If you add a little bailing wire I am sure it will be fine. Spray on some WD40 just to be sure.

That may be and I won't lose any sleep over it. I'm not owed anything but Im definitely tempted to negotiate. For the sake of discussion consider this: This is not the first gun I've purchased from LGS, and it would seem LGS might have some interest in investing in (a) our relationship lest it be the last becuase I have other options (b) my willingness to refer business (in any retail business referrals are huge). I'm not saying I need to be made whole, yes it was a used gun, but when I buy it at a dealer is it really unreasonable to expect fitness for purpose? Like he could say man that sucks, I really don't owe you anything, but I appreciate your business here's a $50 gift certificate towards your next purchase. Am I really a communist for having this expectation?

                            OP

What are your thoughts about having a smith or a neighbor silver soldering the lug back onto the barrel????

As you are buying used, I get cars inspected.... some learn how to inspect firearms- New and used.... I have been burned when buying new Russian made guns as I did not know what to inspect before I drosed the firearm....
