Super Dumb Question I am sure

Okay, in our haste to buy our first firearms, Turner's convinced us to buy a Mossberg 500 Tactical Persuader as our first shotgun for my wife since it has an adjustable stock and pistol grip. It is easier for her to handle, etc. However, since that time, we went to Triple B's and fell in love with sporting clays using Beretta rentals (since her shotgun is not allowed there). Here is my question:

I want to remove the pistol grip (thus, the adjustable stock as well) and replace it with a standard stock that will make the gun "Triple B's Legal" (in addition to replacing the barrel for a 20"+ one).

All I can find online is people taking regular 500's and converting them with aftermarket grips. I want to go backwards. I want to remove pistol grips and put a regular stock on. I think this is okay but anyone here have experience? I saw one site that said some 500's can not be converted because they came from the factory this way.

I think it is cheaper to buy a new Moss500 with 28" and removable chokes or AT semi-auto which has great reviews (I also have one and love it) than to convert this one to standard configuration. Dont forget the cost of the 28" barrel and set of chokes.

I have both and when 500 is a proven workhorse, i think it has a little bit harsh recoil for a woman. ATI being a gas operated is a very soft shooter.

What exactly does Triple B's ban? I haven't been there in a few years, but this is news to me, and I couldn't find anything on their website about firearm configurations that are not allowed. Is this the word of an employee, or is there written policy? Oddly enough I was planning on going out there with my M4, but it seems I saved a trip.

If the ladies can take a 12ga, perhaps, a look at the Mossberg 930. A bit bulky maybe,but, one of the EASIEST 12 ga you/they will ever shoot. Very "soft" for what you are shooting. Comfortable comes to mind.

Yes you can pop on an after market stock. Get a 2nd barrel anyways one for indoor and one for sport till you get the Beretta. I have a mossberg 500A take off stock I will give you unless your looking specific for a cool cheek riser one! PM if interested.

Most shotgun ranges don't allow pistol grip shotguns, and have a minimum barrel length.

It's not the guns they want to keep out, it's the goof balls that own them.

If you like an adjustable non pistol stock, the only one I was able to find is the ATI Akita, which I have on my 590, and like quite a bit.

Brownell's carries most of the parts (including stocks, barrels, etc.) for Mossberg 500's, but as others have pointed out, it quickly will get cheaper to just buy another gun.

It is unfortunate as Mossberg sells as Security/Field Combo that even contains a pistol grip addition, can buy them all day long for $400. Go on Gun Genie, enter Mossberg 500 12ga, a page or two into the results you will find the Security/Field combo. Then enter your zip and retailers close to you will bid a price.

NO NO NO NO NO!

Please stop and think about what you are doing. You do NOT want to do this and here is why:

1. NOBODY does well with a pump at a SKEET range. You can try, but in the end, it SUCKS.
2. Although the Mossberg 500 is a great gun for home defense, it is NOT a Skeet gun or can ever be made to be in a Skeet class. PERIOD.
3. The Mossberg 500 is designed to shoot maybe several hundred rounds a year. If you put several hundred rounds per month or per weekend, you are really wearing it out and cutting its life short.
4. Skeet guns are designed to not fail. Very few moving parts, very simple.
5. Your fail points are your action rods, extractor, and magazine tube. PLUS, sometimes the Mossberg does NOT fare well with S&B loads.
6. Skeet guns are designed to take punishment. They are made to fire thousands of rounds a month. They also cost a LOT. (A LOT meaning about 1k for cheap, 2500+ for entry level)

Listen to YSR_Racer. A Beretta A300 Outlander is about $700 or so and is an EXCELLENT choice for someone who wants to go to Triple Bs and blast Skeet all day long.

I myself use a Beretta Extrema-2 Ulrika that I paid $1200 for. It is smooth and shoots very nicely. I wanted a semi auto so that was my choice. I was NOT thrilled that there are hardly ANY accessories for it, but it WORKS. If I had to do it again I would get a Remington 1187 or an Outlander. Okay, I would probably get an Outlander.

You can reconfigure your pump shotty to use if you really want to, but since I have been at Triple Bs I can tell you what I have seen, EVERYONE that has shown up with a pump has not done well on doubles consistently and by the end of the day, they were ready to drop the cash to buy an O/U shotgun...

O/U shotguns are just so much faster to aim and shoot not to mention easier.

It is hard for me to explain so I won't. I will sum it up. An M-4 with an 18-20" barrel is NOT a skeet gun. It should NOT be used as one. Any home defense barrel is inaccurate. I took my Mossberg 930 SPX there and I am a believer. The barrel is made with NO choke and it will make your shot pattern spread out greatly, plus because the barrel is so short, if you move just a little bit you are going to be off more so than if you had a 28" or 26" barrel like most of the guns there have. Skeet and all that needs its own gun, the BEST is most likely a O/U and they can be costly, but they shoot like a dream.

But really the biggest issue with any HD gun there is the barrel length not keeping your shot tight.

I think by the time you shell out the money for a new stock and barrel you might as well go to Big 5 and get a new shotgun. They have sales all the time on mossbergs and Remingtons. Just a thought to consider. Then youde have a home defense gun and a range gun.
