A 3.5" won't shoot any farther than a 3", given the same velocity and pellet size/specific density, but it will give you additional pattern density at any given range. I have not looked it up, but I think it's harder to penetrate a coyote pelt than a fully plumed goose, so the same load may not be ideal for both applications. There are lots of tables that will show retained energy at various ranges for different muzzle velocities and pellet sizes, so one can research the details for specific loads.
The "best" factory goose load is probably the Federal Heavyweight, if you can find it. I shot some a few years ago and was impressed. Shot at two geese, dropped two geese, both way out there. The best readily available goose load is probably Kent Tungsten Matrix. The best long range coyote load will be a slug or sabot, matched to the gun. I got a Benelli SuperNova on order. The application is somewhat unique. I do ADC work on a cattle ranch and as I crisscross the property i pass numerous natural and manmade water holes. Often I will find ducks and geese in these. This is the quality we see:
I'm always carrying a 22-250 and a 12ga in the truck. When I see big birds in a tank after a long walk I'd like to have one load suitable for waterfowl or predators. I've gotten both sitting near water with and without my caller. This isn't in Cali...it's in NW AZ. Waterfowl and the calving seasing coincide. I stumbled across a multi-size pellet 3.5" shell there but cannot recall the name...I think it had the word Gold in it. I carry both in the truck but only one to the stand depending on the terrain. This past waterfowl season I was hunting a friends cattle ranch. We were in lay down blinds on the edge of a big pond that their fields drain into. We were hunting speckle belly geese. The cattle worked up to the water to get a drink. I saw a couple of coyote sneaking up on the bottom side of the waters edge.
Now this is on the other side of the pond about 45 yards. I'm sitting there watching the coyote getting ready to jump up and try to get one of these steers. I popped up out of my blind and it looked over at me. I had my long range extended choke in because the geese were flying high that day. Loaded with cheep Winchester super X BB.
Shot the coyote and dropped him right on the waters edge.
Was kind of funny because my dog swam over thinking I shot a bird. Swam up and looked at the yote, paused then swam back with a look on his face like "wtf did you shoot?"
The key is a tight choke so you get a clean kill. I would say off of the shot I took I could have possibly taken the same shot at 55 yards and it would have killed it clean.Last edited by torquen; 03-14-2016, 12:39 PM.Comment

I use a Carlson Dead Coyote choke, very tight tube and have had BBs drop a wounded yote at almost 80 yards out. If you've cleanly killed coyotes with steel BBs at 80 yards then I would guess that Hevi-shot (not hevi steel) #2s would be fine. I didn't think a load of steel BBs would do that.
