Scope for marlin 795

I've got a cheap Tasco Pronghorn 3x9-32 on my UMC-2 I got at Wally World for $36. Works perfect and clear. Also a one piece mount was a must, especially since my rifle only had like a 1/4" dovetail.

I picked up a Barska 4x32MM IRC for $45 from Big 5. Should I have gone with the Simmons for $5 more? I can return it. I"ll try it at the range tomorrow..

Fixed 4 power?
I would at minimum go with a variable 3-9x with AO.
(I wish I had gone with a 4-12x or more)

I have a Simmons 3-9x and really wish I would have gone with a higher magnification too.

Yeah I'm only looking to spend $50 give or take. It's a $150 .22 rifle.

Huh? You can easily hunt any small game with .22lr - squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, foxes etc. Even coyotes, if you get them with a head shot.

Personally I have a UTG 3-9x50mm R/G Illumininated AO true strength scope.
Its big and heavy, but it works great. Yea I know people hate on UTG.
But it holds zero, has great features for the price and the optics are super clear.

Its not for everyone the 50mm objective is probably way overkill and adds to the weight.. You have to choose a scope that fits the roll you want for the rifle. My 795s roll is a "tactical" style rifle primarily designed to shoot off a bipod so weight isn't much of an issue.

I would not hesitate to get another UTG scope, at least in their TS line.
When I get my XT-22 I will probably put a 4-16x40mm UTG scope on it.

They can travel over a mile with ease...
Using the velocity of a minimag they can travel the distance of a mile in just over 4 seconds. (not accounting for any other variables that slow it).

Depends on your definition of effective..
I have shot 22LR out to apx 350 yards at the SSZS hitting a metal plate that was like 2.5 feet x 2.5 feet
Theres plenty of videos on Youtube of people shooting out to 400-500 yards.

People have hunted with 22LR for as long as the round has existed.
My grandfather hunted squirrel during the depression with a single shot bolt action 22LR to put food on the table. I know a family that takes out coyote on their ranch with 22LR.

And saying its just for plinking is kind of insulting the the round. It is very capable of making tiny groups and being used in competition. Otherwise it wouldn't be used in the Olympics..

SoCal you really really need to do more reading on your own.
And you need to stop listening to your friends that told you a 22 couldn't pierce human skin, like you said in the other thread.

Couple these with a little blue loctite and you got a rock solid mount that will shoot the behind off a fly.

For inexpensive rimfire scopes, the Simmons 22 mag line is pretty nice for the price. Between the .22's in the family, we run 3 of them; one 4x and two of the 3-9, one of which has the adjustable objective. The AO model is nice to have if going beyond 50 yds. The one piece UTG/Leapers mount works well on the 795 to keep the scope from moving. The groove cuts on the 795 are pretty poor.
