Don't have any recent photos of 50 yds groups but intend on setting up a 50 yd target on friday and will post photos after.

As others have said, ammo makes a HUGE difference in accuracy!

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is to get a good night's sleep before you hit the range and avoid that morning coffee. My reticle can look like a bass guitar string with each beat of my heart if I drink a cup.

The advice that as_rocketman gave about having a buddy spot for you is a good thing. I'd add that having a buddy with you to compete against is also helpful. It's amazing how a small wager (6 pack or who buys lunch, etc.) can improve your groups, and the more Muhammad Ali-style trash talking between you the better. Some examples I find useful...

            1. "Is that the same shotgun you were using last time?"
            2. "I can almost taste that steak already."
            3. "Want to try my rifle after the next line break? Never mind; prolly won't make any difference."

Also - though not all that helpful in improving my 100 yd groups - I like to use a white backing that extends ~2' above my target so I can see the bullet dropping down onto the target before it hits. Kinda neat to watch.

Use match grade ammo. Shoot off of sand bag's.

Make up and practice a routine at home. Dry fire at home by taking the bullet and powder out of a few unfired rounds and just focus on the hold, breath, heart beat, trigger technique, posture without thinking about outcome. There is a book called Golf is not a game of perfect, you should read it. If you focus on outcome you will put unneeded pressure on yourself. when I was playing golf at my best I would practice 2 to 3 times before I played 1 round that counted. I had a zero index. Perfect practice will produce perfect shots, imperfect practice will produce, you guessed it, imperfect shots, just like golf.
Dry fire is cheap, and can be done often. Good luck.

I think its the ammo and gun?

I have a cheap 99$ marlin 795 blk friday special from 4 years ago

the groups are 1-3 inches at 50 yards, and 3-4 at 100 yards with a cheap barska scope and has about a 8-10 inch drop? I since then upgraded the scope mount though, havent taken it back out.

                    Pictures or it didn't happen.

Haven't been able to get to the range, been too cold and windy (yup, call me a wimp). I did go through some old photos I took a month or two ago, and my groups were markedly smaller, so I'm guessing either my technique is getting worse or it's largely the ammo to blame. Need to get back to the range, use the right ammo and give it one more try to say for sure. And yes, I will post pictures afterwards.

Just to add something to this thread . You can actually over clean a rimfire. Clean about every 300-500 rounds or whenever your groups start opening up.

If your having a hard time seeing the cross hair's in the black you may want to print off some bench rest targets they are just hollow one inch squares also make's it easy to see the holes .I put five of them one sheet
Also don't worry about a hundred yard until you're shots are touching at closer range.

Try some wolf match target ammo.

                          That's 10 rounds on a 1" shoot-n-see at 88yds.

+1, WMT seems to run well for a wide variety of rifles.

Used Blazer for American Rifle, 10/22, and 10/22 takedown. Used CCI Tactical with dedicated Spikes 22 AR upper. No slings, just sitting in camp chair and resting on sleeping bag on table.

AR post/ghost sites are the easiest on my eyes to see now that I'm wearing progressive glasses. I found it difficult to get a consistent site picture on the 10/22 sites. The American Rifle fiber optic was very bright (much easier to see than 10/22 brass dot), but the fiber optic completely covered the bullseye making it hard to center.

The setup (targets at 25 & 50 yds)

                              Pictures of each:

I'm interested in comments / recommendations. This was basically a comparative baseline for me. I want to put a scope on something, so the American Rifle makes sense. I'd like to keep irons on at least one of the 10/22's, so the comments I've read on Tech Sites and my preference for the AR sites makes me think that is the way to go. Not sure whether to go Tech Sites on 10/22 or Takedown. Will leave AR alone as is...
I cannot hit the side of a barn with open sights. My preferred non-scope type sights are aperature sights, front and rear, which work well for me out to 100yds for target shooting although target selection is important with aperture type sights. For general plinking and non serious target shooting I use a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot (3 moa dot). I find that works really well for me on targets like clay pidgeons out to 100yds as the dot only covers 3" @ 100yds and the clays are 4" so its a good sight for shooting those.

Many folks rave about the Tech Sights which are rear aperture and front post in most cases and another good choice. I think they are the most common type of sight used in the Appleseed Events.

The trick to aim at the bottom of the black that way your front site doesn't cover the target and you can be more precise (6:00clock if that make since? With iron sites.
