A pair of 10/22s for sure, to start off. Eventually, a CMMG upper (or two!) on a real AR15 lower.

The older pair can learn to shoot without fighting over who gets to go first, while the younger pair reload mags. Put 'em to work young! LOL

Put tech sights on the 10/22, and then when they're ready to move up to the AR platform (be it 15/22 or pure AR15), they'll already be comfortable working the same style iron sights. Otherwise, leave 'em stock. (perhaps extended mag release lever, but most of the other mods available are truly unnecessary)

      thanks!

that's more or less the route in going to take... 4 kids shooting at once sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

I've heard the aftermarket bolt hold open is a must... don't really see the need for a nice trigger on a kids training plinker...

i currently own both, the only reason i bought the 15/22 was because it was a good price, ftf is a common with mine, my other two rugers will always shoot and will always be on target. s&w 15/22 will always look cool, feel like plastic and might not shoot

I have to admit, the aftermarket bolt hold open seems really pointless to me. Maybe it's just me, but I have ZERO problems manipulating the stock lever to hold the bolt open when I want to. If you really want it, it's literally about 15 minutes in front of the TV with a file, grinding down one little piece off the stock part:

I'd give that a shot before buying the aftermarket stuff, frankly... if you're replacing it with aftermarket anyway, it really can't hurt, and costs nothing to try.

Other than upgrade sights (tech sights) I see no need to modify anything from stock... maybe the buffer, actually ($5 piece of plastic in place of the metal one), but otherwise, nope, stock is good.

Well, add a sling. Slings are good.

            Marlin 795?

Get two Marlin 795's for $300. I love that it is light (something like 4 lbs.) and it has last shot bolt hold open. That's what my boys learned on. The thing is super accurate too. Mags are all over ebay. You could get 4 795's for the price of one MOE (almost).

Great little rifles, but useless for practicing AR15 handling, of course.
