I think 20K is a reasonable goal. Maybe 25K. Built up gradually over a year or two. That's only 4 cases. Just get in the habit of buying a brick here and there. Jump on good deals for a case.
1. Nothing is more fun than sharing a brick with someone out of .22 and looking frantically. Especially new shooters who bought 50 rounds with their new .22 and used it up in minutes.
2. Prices will always be higher in the future. A decent stock on hand is an investment. If stored in a cool, dark place (floor of the closet) it will last for decades. So your children can inherit it if you don't shoot it up yourself.
3. When the EOTWAWKI is here .22 will be an excellent medium of exchange.
