If I were to get a Ruger, I would get a takedown or tactical and those aren't that much cheaper than the M&P.

Just realize that those aren't rifles that you buy to modify. If you want to modify for accuracy get a cheap wood stock standard model. There aren't any mods yet for the takedown, and why spend the extra money on the tactical if you're just going to change everything? It makes zero sense.

In my opinion, since this is your first rifle you should get something with iron sights and learn them... once you think you've learned them, continue using them for a long time.... Then look into red dots and scopes. Using irons is a good skill that carries over to all platforms.

As far as gun choice, you need to sit down and consider what you want from your rifle... I wanted a fun semi auto plinker that was reliable and easy to clean. I bought the M&P 15-22 and haven't looked back. It is so much fun and as accurate as I need it to be for my usage. If I was going to get crazy with high power scopes and work really hard on dime size groups from 100 yards, I would have gone with a different gun. I love my 15-22 and always leave the range happy.

My buddy and I went through over 1300 rounds in one outing with it and zero failures... He was super impressed, and I was too.

Man, I wish you wouldn't have said that, I was sure that I would get a 10/22 because I have seen a video of ammo exploding in the chamber of the 15-22 and that scared me. Now you have had good luck with them. However the 10/22 is a lot cheaper. I just don't know what to do.

Yeah, they had issues for a little while... Not an issue with the newer models and Smith & Wesson took care of any issues that were reported.... They stand by their stuff.

If the 15-22 is still an option, it'll save you money in the long run versus the 10/22 and all of the upgrades that you will want for it

Best thing to do if you can is to shoot both of them... if you were in nor cal I would take you out with my 15-22 and you would probably buy one on your way home

The 10/22 is good too though... just different.

But yeah, I agree. When it comes to bang and performance for the buck, CZ-USA has some amazing products.

Ruger's 10/22 is a great gun too, and everyone should probably own one after getting a CZ. I like the browning break down 22 and lever 22, but those are quite a bit more expensive.

I replied to you other thread too. One thing I'll add: I got my first Ruger 10/22 around 1969. It was a great lot of fun and a lot of gun for 20+ years, nothing but enjoyable every time I pulled it out.

Sold it, long story. Bought another '68 10/22 a while back. It's a great lot of fun and a lot of gun, nothing but enjoyable every time I pull it out!

Most reliable guns I've ever owned in over 45 years of owning many others.

I have decided to get a 10/22 because Turner's has them on sale for $200 and I can't pass that up. What do I need to have done in order to get my first gun. Is there any test I need to take? Now my question is do you guys shoot them at ranges only or do you sometimes take them out to the desert? It doesn't seem to do a rifle justice by only shooting at indoor ranges.

Great choice! If you're over 18 with a clean record (no felonies or domestic abuse) you'll need your drivers license with your current address. I can't remember if you need a second proof of address for a rifle but I don't think so. You pay your money plus $30 for the instant background check plus sales tax and then wait 11 (10 anywhere else) full days before you can pick it up. There is no test for a rifle only handguns.

As long as you pay in full when you start the wait you get the special price.

You have to pay for the rifle to start the DROS process and the 10 day wait. Turners does do layaway, but for $200, there is little need. 10/22 is a great rifle. I myself am partial to the Marlin 60 tube fed. Can fit 18 rounds. But few aftermarket parts.

California has a ten day waiting period on all firearm sales. They claim it is so that the DOJ and ATF can do a thorough check to see if the buyer is eligible, but truthfully, I believe it is a cooling off period since the DROS is instant in some states.

You Can't go wrong with a 10/22, I was bought one when I was 4 years old, it had a modified stock with a shorter LOP so I could shoot it well, and I learned fundamentals and safety with that gun... I still have it today and will hopefully give it to my kid.

That being said, I am a huge advocate of the 15-22 and even more so the sig 522. They are both great trainers for BRD (black rifle disease) which you most likely will contract if you hang around here for long. I have a Sig 522 and have had exactly 1 stovepipe in almost 3k rounds. And I suspect that it was because of a subsonic round. Otherwise it has eaten everything i have fed it, including some crappy bulk ammo and a fair amount of subsonics as well. Oh yeah I also have not cleaned it... it is like the energizer bunny. Also it is insanely accurate... I hate to say it since I am a huge ruger fan, but I think it could be the greatest semi auto .22 as of this point in time.
