I am 18 and was looking for a pistol until I learned that 18 year olds can't own a handgun. So I have moved on and am now looking at rifles. I have narrowed it down to the Ruger 10/22 or the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22. If not what else? Thanks

If you are looking for something classic, check out CZ-USA's Model 452. That model is being replaced, but there are still a fare number available and are nicely priced, top performing guns. This is a bolt action, removable magazine rifle.
It is hard to go wrong with a Ruger 10-22. Check out the breakdown model. But my recommendation would be to go with a classic bolt action like the CZ452.

It depends on what you're looking for in a .22, OP:
Bolt-action: CZ452; the Trainer is a bare-bones workhorse that is an amazing rifle, while the Lux and International models have various other features or stocks.
Semi-auto (Non-Tactical): Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 795; the Ruger has a larger aftermarket but the 795 seems to be more ready to go right out of the box. You can see the 795 thread sticky'd at the top and mine and Chaos47's are in there.
Semi-auto (Tactical): S&W M&P15-22 or Sig522 or GSG-5/Umarex MP5 in 22; The M&P would be great if you plan on moving up to an AR later on as controls, feel, and ergonomics will be roughly the same, plus the accessories will fit both as well. The Sig is essentially a Sig556 in 22 and seems to be fairly well-received. The GSG5/Umarex is a .22 MP5 and you don't have to be an elite (
) to own one in CA. These seem to have a fairly decent track record as well.
Personally, I only have experience with the CZ, the 10/22, and the Marlin. I like all 3 and each have their pros/cons and it's a matter of prioritizing what you want in the .22 and what set of pros/cons fit you best. Enjoy!!

I have a 452 and for less money than I would spend on a 10/22 I have a gun that fires as good as rifles costing 3 times as muchJohn P. Hermesmeyer

I would vote for a Ruger 10/22, great gun if you plan on sticking to shooting. But as stated before, the Marlin is supposedly "ready" out of the box.
As a new shooter myself, I got a 10/22 a few months ago and I still love it. Put 6 bricks through it, cleaned it once and it performs wonderfully. It has great options to alter the gun if you ever get to that point."Glorification comes from the journey, not the outcome" - Phil JacksonComment

Between the two the Ruger. Or get any tactical rimfire that takes black dog machine magazines. Unless you have a solid line on GSG and/or S&W mags.Son, one day you will make a girl very happy, for a short period of time. Then she will leave you and be with men who are ten times better than you could ever hope to be. These men are called Marines.Comment

That was extremely rude of the person who told you that. I am a member over there and I am surprised that happened to you. Generally there are a lot of great, helpful folks over on rimfirecentral.com.
Must have been a California hater that told you that. We at Calguns would never be that rude.
As for the rifle, it depends on your primary use. For plinking get a semi-auto, for best accuracy for target shooting, bolt action. Nearly any bolt action rifle will be more accurate out of the box than any semi-auto. Best choice is the one that appeals to you most, after all none of the good ones are cheap and its best to avoid getting the wrong one if you can. Decide on what you will do with the rifle before you choose.Comment

I pointed him to calguns. His original query was about getting a .22 pistol. Being under 21yrs old complicated things for him. Seeing inaccurate info that made the OP believe he couldn't "own" a handgun prompted the CG mention. Where was the rudeness in that? That was extremely rude of the person who told you that. I personally didn't think it was rude. It wasn't like "Get the heck out of here! Go somewhere else!" I just thought you were recommending this forum because it is a California forum.Comment
