mine upper had the standard gas block front sights but no rear sights. I put a truglo red dot reflex sight on it and took it to the range. I went through 250 rounds of 22 in about an hour or so. I LOVE IT. tons of fun and super economical. the way I figure it, Big 5 sells 50 rounds of 223 for about 22 bucks. My trip today would have cost me $100 bucks in ammo. I paid $600 for the Tac Sol upper and at this rate, I just need to go to the range about 5 more times and I will have paid for the upper just in ammo savings.

I used Winchester match grade lead ball ammo. I got some problems with some of the rounds not ejecting right. It would get hung up in the BCG. Out of 375 rounds I had thig happen about 20 times. The worst jam was when the brass would get lodged between the BCG and the charging handle. I had to unpin the rear of the upper to get the shell out. Anyone else has this problem?

I might be ammo related. I will try a different brand next time.

Overall it's a great setup bc you can shoot all day long and not feel it in the pocket book.

It must be your ammo, I used the Blazer bulk ammo (525 round box) it went through at least 450 rounds 1st time to the range without a single FTF or FTE.

Tried a box of Remington brass plated hollows. (on sale at Big 5)
ran about 430 rounds through it and had 6 fail to feeds.

heard that Ammo Bros in Cerritos has 4000 rounds for $180. It's suppose to be federal copper plated. Should work a lot better.

      Back to OP.

Do it. you will not be sorry and you will get lots of range time with set up.

I was at the range for 2 1/2 hours yesterday.

To be more clear I guess. I am looking at getting cmmg as I haven't found anything else that I want
But since them, a couple have been mentioned, each deserving consideration. Still undecided myself

I wonder if anyone would do a group buy for 22 upper with bcg and mags
You can get a CMMG 16" Sierra upper for about 320ish shipped, if they still have that coupon going from calssportingarmory.com. That's where I got mine.

          New Frontier

Went into Parallax Tactical yesterday and they had one complete New Frontier LW-15 lower for $110. I put it in jail and should be mine next Saturday.

We also configured a complete upper using the CMMG 22lr BCG and 1/12 twist BBL and the least expensive upper parts they had and it came in at $400. I looked online and the CMMG uppers (with non functional fwd assist) would cost $370 shipped. So I think I'll go with supporting the LGS.

Basically for the price of a S&W 15/22 MOE, I'll get an AR15/22 than can take a 5.56 upper down the road.

I DROS'ed a LW-15 lower yesterday at Riflegear for $99 and I will mate it with a CMMG LE .22 upper. I'll post it up once I have it done.

I have this on my current setup, almost complete. Are the LW-15 hammers too wide for the CMMG 22 uppers? Also, I know the hammer springs on them might be too tight for the blowback to cycle so I went ahead and did the "15 minute trigger job" to the lower.

Will post pics of my rifle soon.

Picked up my CMMG Evolution upper today. Took it home and wiped off a bunch of the oil and then used Froglube. Took it Iron Sights with a box of CCI Tactical 22 and she ran like a champ. ~100 rounds with no FTF/FTE. No issues at all with the New Frontier trigger or hammer. Although the trigger reset is really clunky and the takedown pins are really tight. The overall weight of the rifle is 5.4lbs without optics and magazine. The balance is real nice.

hmm thought of this myself for a bit, it would be nice because you can switch from .22 to .223 if you ever feel the itch to, unlike the colt m4/m16 (and other's) .22's that are dedicated to that caliber.

I almost built one, but eventually decided against it for cost reasons. I really liked the idea of using a Plum Crazy complete lower to off set the weight of a CMMG Evolution upper with the working BHOA and forward assist. Being able to switch to a centerfire upper is a plus, but since my intention was to keep it a dedicated 22 and use it as a trainer, I decided to just go with a 15/22 MOE, it was the path of least resistance and cost. I still think it would be a fun project though.

BTW, I take it the Plum Crazy became New Frontier, right?

What's the cost out the door for a 15/22 MOE? I calculated about 650 for my setup and I'm happy with it.

anyone know if the BHOA adapter on the cmmg dedicated .22 will work on this lower? anyone else found that they needed to add parts or mods to make it work? if i do get this lower i might get this pressure plug. i have read that polymer lowers are particular weak in the area where the buffer tube screws on to the lower.

New Frontier LW-15 complete lower $110 (Parallax Tactical)
CMMG Evolution 22lr complete upper $400 (Parallax Tactical)
So it's very comparable to the S&W 15/22 in price.

The one I got is a flat top upper, so I still need optics. I have a 5.56 upper so it's good to go either way. I did not get the BHOA or the forward assist options but the bolt does stay open when my BDM mags are empty. As soon as I drop the mag, the bolt closes. I didn't buy a pressure plug and after ~100 rounds I haven't had any issues. I did buy a Radlock so I don't need a tool when I shoot 22lr. So far I really happy I went with this set up.

The BHOA should work fine, but depending on the specific upper/lower combo you may need to do a little fitting of the BHOA with a file. No big deal, only need to do it once, and It's been my experience that its not always needed.

As far as other mod's... It should run well out of the box (minus break-in if you have a parkerized setup). That said, I've been messing around with the pressure plug and while I do like it... I dont think that every upper/.22lr gun NEEDS one. The dedicated CMMG uppers for example use kind of a ball detent that presses into around the barrel and helps to lock the bolt in place which mostly prevents the kind of wear we'd like to avoid. That said... I do believe that the pressure plug could help to completely eliminate wear on the buffertube/rear of there receiver.

If I was using JUST a conversion kit (any brand) in a 5.56 upper or almost any other dedicated .22lr upper, I would absolutely get a plug because it will help to stabilize the bolt a little better AND will help to stop unneeded wear in the rear of the gun.

Now, the question is... How much wear can I expect to have to deal with if i dont have something like the plug.... Well, my main .22LR setup has over 30k rounds through it and the wear is minimal due to the detent that CMMG uses. However, I've seen some really bad cases with old conversion bolts that after 1000 rounds have put a craptastic amount of wear inside edge of the buffer tube and on the rear of the lower receiver.

I personally will probably be using the plugs for now on... They are inexpensive and seem to help maintain the condition of guns that i shoot a lot.

I just finished assembling mine and found that the follower wouldn't activate the BHOA. I ended up having to cut a couple coils off the bolt catch spring. now it seems to work fine . I can't wait till I get a chance to take this thing to the range!

I was pondering a cheap 22 build too but ended up buying a S&W 15/22 that was on sale at Turners for $399 about 2 years ago. I added a fake suppressor from rrages.com to cover the naked barrel and a Magpul MOE+ grip. It's one of my favorite .22 rifles.
