Thoughts on .22 pistols purchase

Back on topic - I have a Browning Buckmark which will eat Federal, Remington Gold, Armscor and Blazer. Those are the only brands I have so I cannot comment on others.

Lot's of P22's can be picky when breaking them in. It's not common at all for them to require HV ammo for the first 1K rounds or so. After that, most of them will eat anything.

How many rounds does your brother have through it?

Also if it is an older P22, he may want to google "P22 bible." Every problem is addressed in it. I have found that the newer P22's run fine out of the box (after a break in period). Walther has fixed most of the problems you read about online.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but I read negative posts on P22's all the time online. Most by people that admittedly don't even own one
I went ahead and bought one anyways (because it just looked so damn ) And it has been one of my favorite guns.

I believe that the complaints that you read about online are from people that have not put enough rounds through the gun to break it in.

I have a lot of guns. Over ten 22's. And the P22 is one of my favorites.

Maybe true but the P22 is 100 times more fun. My P22 is one of my favorite guns. Everyone loves shooting it. I would get the P22.

I bought my P22 after reading reviews here on CGN. It's come with me to my last 2 trips to the range and I have experienced none of the problems that I had seen people listed and I love that little gun.

Granted, it only has about 600 rounds +/- through it thus far (with more tomorrow) but in that amount of time, Ive honestly had less than 3 FTF/FTE.

I have a p22 and a 22/45 I prefer the 22/45 but I havent had many ftf with the p22. I honestly got the p22 for my wife and later the ruger for myself. The p22 is fun but really small if you have big hands. Also the p22 comes with two mags one with a finger rest which makes it easier to shoot for me. The ruger 22/45 fits me better but field stripping is the biggest pain in the ***** of any gun I have owned, rugers are a pain to strip but the 22/45 takes the cake.

I never thought about conversions.My stable consist of glock 20 10mm,taurus p925 .45, and star fierstar 9mm any kits for any of them.I still want a .22(can never have to many guns) but a coversion would be great for training.Thanks for all the info

I have a Ruger MKII 6" bull that's 30 years old. I just started shooting it a few months ago after it sat in the safe for 10 years. Considering how little I shoot pistol, I can't say enough about how accurate this thing is. -g

Browning and Rugers are still the best shooters out of the box. They both have models that are well under 300 and are loads of fun. One consideration is how they break down to clean and what parts are under the hood(simpler is better). I own the browning buckmark target and have a SEG on my face when reel in my target.

You know, that's a great question. I'm not sure if a .22 conversion kit needs to be shipped to a FFL and start the paperwork process since it's not a complete gun. .22 conversion kits seem similar to AR upper receivers to me which don't really have restrictions and waiting periods like the lower receivers (i think). Maybe someone else in the forum can advise better; otherwise, I would just call and ask a firearms dealer.

I just got a P22 less than a month ago. Due to school, I have only been able to put 500 rounds through it, but not one failure or issue so far. I did quite a bit of research at first as well, and most everyone that actually broke it in with CCI mini mags for the first 1,000 rounds say it'll eat most stuff after that. MANY people buy a P22 and try to feed it dirty bulk ammo right away... probably not the best idea.

That being said, a P22 is NOT a bad choice. A Ruger 22/45 is a great choice however and they were ~$40 cheaper when I was looking in Sacramento a month ago

BTW, I love the way my P22 looks, feels, and shoots. Tons of fun

I, too, have a P.22 and love it. I have lost track of how many rounds are through it, but I'm sure I put 5,000+ through it in the first couple of months. I've never had a jam outside of a bad cartridge. FWIW, I do not clean it like I should, and didn't do any major "mods" to the pistol (AK model, nickel, 3.4"). I'm no professional, but I know an accurate pistol vs. one that isn't, and *my* P.22 is dead on. I've only shot 2-3 others, but was pleased with them, too. There's no way I would shoot nearly as much if I hadn't bought that little pistol. When it finally breaks, I will repair/re-buy. I use Remington Goldens in bulk ($20 for 500) which is far from great ammo, and no problems.

The P22 is a cool little gun. I plan on getting one for the wife and then stealing it for practice. Ruger MKIII's and Browning Buckmarks are cool if you want an accurate gun to go to the range and have fun plinking with, or to take hunting for small game, but if the idea is to get defensive practice in too, then something built more like a CCW gun would be best. Converson kits are the best because you get to practice with the same gun you'd be carrying, just realize the difference in recoil will throw off your followup shots slightly if you don't also practice with the caliber you intend to carry.

If you could find a used PK380, a P22 would be the best thing you could possibly buy for training. I'm hoping that ends up being my situation...
