Thoughts on .22 pistols purchase

I have a Beretta U22 Neos 6 inch in jail right now. I pick it up Tuesday and got it from Action Guns in Rancho for $289 new. Unfortunately, the wife says I need to stick it under the tree and can't give a range report till after Christmas.

The Neos is a great gun. Very under appreciated IMO. Mine's a tack driver.

The P22, Neos, Mosquito and S&W 22 all have a lot more problems than a Ruger or Browning will. I would never suggest getting any of the first guns until you have a Ruger, Browning, High Standard or S&W41 first. The other guns just do not hold up 1/2 as well. You'll hear newbs talking about their's and how they've shot 1K-5K rounds without a problem. I'm not talking about a virtually new gun, with a measily 5K through it, falling apart. I'm talking about the fact that a Ruger, Browning, High Standard or S&W41 will last for 200K to 500K with little or no repairs. The newer designer guns just don't compare.

BTW, the range I used to work at rented a Neos and it was down more than it was available. Every regular shooter whit a P22 or Mosquito always has problems. The S&W 22 is probably one of S&Ws biggest fails ever.

I love my Ruger MKIII and my next .22lr will probably be a smith and wesson 22A. You can get them dirt cheap, and people are seeming to have really good luck with them all in all.

Maybe true but the P22 is 100 times more fun. My P22 is one of my favorite guns. Everyone loves shooting it. I would get the P22.

If it's true then how can it be 100x more fun unless the idea of fun is clearing jams? No, I don't have one but my brother has one and he does not have anything good to say about it.

Buckmark and Ruger are great pistols, but are a little more expensive than say... a Beretta Neos or a S&W 22A. I own a Neos and it's been just as reliable as a Buckmark or a Ruger with the right types of ammo, and it costs $100-200 less than either options. Additionally takedown on the Neos is incredibly simple and fast. I haven't taken down a Ruger before but I've heard that it can be a PITA.

All .22lr's will eventually jam, get a bad round, or have some kind of malfunction of sorts. It is one of those things inherent in .22 pistols. My MKIII has jammed a handful of times, but its all easy stuff to clear by dropping a mag, re-racking the gun, or numerous other ways to clear out whatever jam you may have. The Mosquito tends to be really finicky on ammo as well as the p22. Some p22's love cheapo federal bulk, and others that I've seen have only shot mini-mags well. It all comes down to each particular gun, but they're all cheap enough that if you really don't like it, eat a few bucks on it and sell the dang thing.

Get a 22/45 if you want a 'full size' .22 the p22 is like a mouse gun compared to the Ruger. IDK about the browning, but I think it's more in line with the Ruger. I have the Ruger, and my GF loves shooting it, she's actually claimed it is hers now...

Good for you, my brother's will only eat High velocity.

Back on topic - I have a Browning Buckmark which will eat Federal, Remington Gold, Armscor and Blazer. Those are the only brands I have so I cannot comment on others.

I have the P22, Mosquito,Sig Trailside, Ruger Mk II and Mk I. This year I put 5,000 rounds through the Mk II, 500 rounds through the Trailside, and 200 rounds through the Mosquito. I hate the Mosquito and P22, because they tend to be fussy on ammo. Mk II chews everything, but got dirty shooting bulk packs of Remington Golden Bullets, which I will never purchase again.

So you can get a new Neos for $100? A new Ruger can be had for about $200 up to $575.

Its pretty simple to look at the track record of them all to see the Bucks Smiths and Rugers are almost always better, with the Ruger being the cheapest one. I really like the way a P22 feels in my hand, but what good does than do if it wont even fire when I need it to?

I never thought about conversions.My stable consist of glock 20 10mm,taurus p925 .45, and star fierstar 9mm any kits for any of them.I still want a .22(can never have to many guns) but a coversion would be great for training.Thanks for all the info

If your other handgun is a Sig, CZ or 1911, you could pick up a .22 conversion kit at a reasonable price. That would pretty much guarantee that the controls are identical to your main handgun.

OMG...you forgot to mention Glocks...
