Which current .22lr semi-auto would you buy

My wife's stainless 10/22 that I bought her in 92 has the real stainless. I dont know what year they went to the spraypaint look..........

Ive owned a few Marlins and also liked the feel better than the Ruger.

Older Rugers have the full stainless receiver--

My understanding is that it was sometime in the last 1-2 years, IIRC.

I deal with manufacturing a fair amount, and their new "stainless" is a far cry from the real deal.

you mean 17HM2? normal 10/22 wont convert to 17HMR. at least not easily or safely.

I would say the marlin 795 is the best for pest control and general plinking. 10/22 is better for tack driving or mall ninja'ing (can i use ninja as a verb?) but it will cost you $100 more.

ya ruger is always going to be my favorite 22lr ever. ive got one set up for the inner mall ninja,pistol grip adj stock forward rails and holo sight. Because cash is always tight and cant afford an ar15 or other battle rifle. and im going to start a target one soon for my GF. neon green stock with the "stainless" look should be very awesome.

I wold also tend to recommend the Colt/Walther/Umarex M16 replicas. Mine has been great after initial break-in. It does need break in, at least 300-500 rounds of good quality ammo (Federal American Eagle, CCI Mini Mags) to break in properly. Mine will now feed, fire and eject most anything witht he exception of Remington ammo. The gun is really fun to shoot and gets quite addicting.

All valuable input and maybe I'll end up with more than one additional .22 rifle

I'm going to keep my eyes open for an older 10/22. If one doesn't come around, I'll go for the Marlin 795. I'm also going to look a little harder at the Colt M4. Considering the cost of .22 ownership and ammo you get a lot of bang for the buck.

I currently own a Calico M105 which is a real blast. I've literally put thousands of rounds through it. It's held up well and isn't real fussy about ammo.

I just came from Bass Pro and picked up the Marlin 795 for 119.00 after DROS taxes and rebate it came to 135.00. My "son's" Birthday gift. Would like to look into the 10/22 or other 22's for me at a later date.

I hope you're right. I just bought a Marlin 60 ss for $230. Will do the trigger mods as per RFC. Looks like a fun little plinker.

I'd go with a Marlin 60. I just like the tubular magazine design.

I have a Marlin 795, which is practically the same, but with a detachable magazine. It's a great gun. At the time I wanted one, the 60 was nowhere to be found and the 795 was about $50 cheaper on sale locally rather then order a 60.

Ruger 10/22 These are reliable, inexpensive, and very popular so there are tons of parts for them. The current madness has pushed the price up on these but keep your eyes open and you'll find one reasonable. For reference out of Kali you could easily get one brand new for under 200.

Go with a Marlin 795. You should have a poll.

Even though the poll will go like this:

1. 10/22, just because of the crowd that follows it.
2. Marlin 795. More accurate out of the box than the 10/22, but crappy sights.
3. Everything else.


Grab a 795, get some tech sights or a scope, and kill everything 150 yards and closer.

+1 all the way. I did this recently, after owning a 10/22 for a year. So far, the Marlin 795 is less finicky, more accurate (once you get the Tech sights on it, and both my 10/22 and my 795 have Tech sights and a sling), and just plain built better now that the new Ruger 10/22's are so crappy (I caught one of the last quality 10/22 old-style models with the real stainless barrels).

I love mine so much, I'm planning to buy another and put a scope and sling on that as well.

10/22 has more options for aftermarket parts, but is more finicky and harder to use, especially if you ever take a noob out shooting. The 795 is very easy to put the Tech sights on compared to the 10/22.
