well, I've pretty much decided to get a dedicated 22 upper.. Probably CMMG.

They are available now . So the question is which one?

There seems to be different versions.

      Any input?

I kind of wish they made a 14" upper, as I could use it on one of my pistol lowers.

Yes, I'm in AZ so we can still have all the neat stuff. Or I might mill a 80% specifically for it.

Thanks please keep the info coming!

RTB will likely have the best pricing on a complete assembled upper if they are in stock. I think RTB is just rebranded CMMG stuff. But you can do a General search for CMMG uppers in stock and see whats out there. I would watch the Equipment Exchange Rimfire section on the ARFCOM Forum for a complete upper or parts to put one together.I have saved alot of money sourcing lightly used stuff at discounts on the Forums. Have to be patient and just wait for the right deals to pop up.

Good Luck and let us know what you find.

RTB is the vendor I used for most parts. They were good.

Most all .22 AR parts at RTB are out of stock....

Does this CMMG upper use "black dog" magazines?

I was in the same situation a few months ago. Building a 22lr upper from parts or buying one ready was going to cost roughly 550 to 600 bucks and you still need a complete lower. Found an MP15-22 for 450 and has worked really well. Yeah it's plasticy but it gets the job done and it's not likely I'm using it for self defense, if it breaks, I won't lose sleep over it. And the McFadden loader works with all different variations, you just need the correct adapter for the loader.

Long before the current AR .22LR platforms, back in the mid 1970s I bought with my lawn mowing money a Squires-Bingham (Armscor) model M-16 semi-auto with wood stock.

Here is a listing on gunbroker for a different version where it looks like someone went and Bubba'ed the stock and front handguard to look more like an AR. The rifle location is listed here in California.

Here is a gunbroker listing for one of the 15 round (for this one/ they made 10 round magazines also) magazines that are used in that rifle.

I've been running Catch22 w/SW mags for years now. If for some reason I were to build another AR22, it would use a Catch22.

Yes, you have to dedicate a lower for it, but the controls/last round bolt hold open are 100% like an AR15.

                    This! ^^^^^

I bought a cheap ($15 lightly used) M&P upper, a CMMG barrel/bolt kit (discontinued due to new model midway <$200), some cheap lower/parts kit, a yankee machine tube handguard...

One of the most fun .22s I had. I used to grin every time I whipped it out...

Before accident I put this together

The blue foam was a test. I ended up using some good foam (and turning the optic toward the handle rather than the ground) and put a shaped piece to fit between the upper and lower to avoid scratching/marring.

I got the Performance Center version of the S&W M&P 15-22 and I like it very much.

                        Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

There is a magwell conversion kit that allows you to use the arguably better and more readily available S&W mags also. The CMMG conversion kit + the magwell kit seem to be the best working combo when building yourself. Now, if you're starting from scratch, note that you have the preference to use a traditional AR barrel or a specific .22LR barrel for increased accuracy. Your call.

That being said, I opted for the M&P 15-22 to not have to deal with all of that. Granted, I would totally do it just to be able to customize the system further. It just ended up being more cost effective to buy a dedicated 22 outright to use as a trainer rifle.

                            Pics for attention...

They came with the rifle so I left them on after I mounted the scope.

My home built AR22s with CMMG parts are always 100% reliable. Even in rapid fire Binary mode. And with any cheap ammo I choose to run through them..The CMMG BCGs do have one downside I will admit to..They break Firing pins occasionally. But CMMG is quick to send you another one. And most of the time two for free.

I have recently started running a Bore Buddy Pin though. They sent me a prototype pin out and it is going strong.. Though CMMG is great about lifetime free replacement of parts. They do need to step up and make a better firing pin. I think it would be cheaper for them than replacing them when they break.

I have never owned a SW, but have read they are reliable. But that does not make up the fact that they are plastic, feel cheap in the hand like a toy, and are a proprietary design, all of which is a big turnoff to me.

But to each his own..If the SW makes you happy..That is what matters, regardless of the pitfalls I or anyone else sees in them.

I never really understood why SW did things the way they did. They could have easily used a aluminum lower and and such and maybe put them out for a few bucks more. They were already making AR15s..So using real receivers would have only taken a little more effort and expense to do it right.

Bullets, the adapters are OK to run the SW mags in a CMMG. I used to have a better mag. But sold it and just run the SW mags after I epoxy a small shim to the mag..They work great that way. No last shot hold open..But that is not all that important to me.

I am thinking of trying the Catch 22 with the SW mags. Anyone ever try one of those?
