    AR-22 type questions?

    So I've decided to get a .22LR AR type rifle.

    Any suggestions? The S&W AR M&P 22 seems like a nice rifle.

    Are the magazines for these usable in others, or is each AR22 type use different magazines?

    I also saw the Omni 22 AR.

    On the S&W is the muzzle threaded so you can use other muzzle devices?

    Reliability?

    Any other brands to consider?
    Poke'm with a stick!

    Build one and avoid premade crap. Use a CMMG format barrel and BCG. Use Black Dog mags. Build it like any AR.

    Mine is super accurate and too much fun.

      The dedicated .22LR AR style rifles tend to use proprietary magazines.
      .22LR AR coversion use their own magazines as well.
      There are adaptors that will modify AR conversions to be able to use proprietary magazines. But, doing so prevents use of the standard AR conversion magazines.

      S&W = proprietary
      (Umarex/Walther) Colt, Beretta, H&K = proprietary
      ATI, Chiappa = proprietary
      ISSC = proprietary
      Mossberg = proprietary
      Tippmann = proprietary
      Ciener, CMMG, Black Dog Machines = AR15 conversion magazines

        If you already own an ar, I agree with jimi. Just build an upper with cmmg stuff. Swap in whatever lower you want to use.

          The S&W M&P 22 is outstanding. It's reliable, accurate, and fun! It eats every brand of ammo you feed it. It weighs very little. To some that's a negative. To others it's a positive.

          One drawback is it's plastic and some say it feels cheap as a result. The other drawback is it's not a real AR. Lastly, they use proprietary mags. But at least the mags aren't expensive. But if those aren't negatives to you, you would be hard pressed to do better.

          Your next option would be to buy a complete upper from an outfit like PSA, Nordic Components, or CMMG. You get a real AR upper to put on a real AR lower. It feels and weighs just like a 5.56 AR. These uppers all use Black Dog mags which are sort of the standard AR 22 mags for most brands.

          Some of those uppers are picky about ammo though. They also perform better if they're kept clean and lubed.

          Your last option is to build your own. That makes the most sense if you're picky about components and know exactly what configuration you want. You get to build it exactly like you want.

            Plasticky. Too light, and feels like a toy.

            I built a dedicated .22AR as a trainer, and always recommend the same. BEST thing is, you have ANOTHER spare lower, should one of your 5.56 AR's go down.

            Used a brand new TacSol upper when I built mine 10 years ago. Sad to say, TacSol is gone, re. .22 uppers.

              Yes, exactly. Build one like you like it..You will be much Happier with it that way.

              I do use SW MP 15-22 Mags in my CMMG parts built rifles..They do have nice mags.

              Here is one of my favorite builds. It is a M16A2 clone with a Binary trigger, Great fun for sure.

                The best thing about the cienar conversions with black dog or cmmg mags are you can buy a mc fadden loader and load the mag in about 15 seconds.

                  I like the M&P 15-22 over a conversion. It’s a better value.

                      This RTB 16 inch .22 LR Pencil barrel is great for easy conversion to a dedicated .22LR setup and works with CMMG or Right To Bear .22LR components. This is the only 22LR lightweight barrel available at a reasonable price. Shop with Right To Bear today and save big!

                      Just put together and 10/22. Looking forward to taking it to the range.

                        I built my AR-22 upper with a $99 CMMG made barrel from RTB, a $39 Anderson lightweight upper receiver and I used an old Ceiner BCG with a CMMG head installed. The entire thing was under $200.

                        Then I had to build another for my wife. I used Leupold 2x7 33mm rimfire scopes, great stuff.

                            I have both. I like my cmmg upper with standard lower over the 15-22 because I like the heavier feel. I run the adapter so both rifles use the same mags. The 15-22 is a great rifle though and new shooters really enjoy it. I usually bring it for new shooters.

                              You say the SW is more reliable than the CMMG assembled Rifle? Not sure where that comes from. Have you ever owned a Rifle built with CMMG parts? My home built AR22s with CMMG parts are always 100% reliable. Even in rapid fire Binary mode. And with any cheap ammo I choose to run through them..The CMMG BCGs do have one downside I will admit to..They break Firing pins occasionally. But CMMG is quick to send you another one. And most of the time two for free.

                              I have recently started running a Bore Buddy Pin though. They sent me a prototype pin out and it is going strong.. Though CMMG is great about lifetime free replacement of parts. They do need to step up and make a better firing pin. I think it would be cheaper for them than replacing them when they break.

                              I have never owned a SW, but have read they are reliable. But that does not make up the fact that they are plastic, feel cheap in the hand like a toy, and are a proprietary design,all of which is a big turnoff to me.

                              But to each his own..If the SW makes you happy..That is what matters, regardless of the pitfalls I or anyone else sees in them.

                              I never really understood why SW did things the way they did. They could have easily used a aluminum lower and and such and maybe put them out for a few bucks more. They were already making AR15s..So using real receivers would have only taken a little more effort and expense to do it right.

                              Bullets, the adapters are OK to run the SW mags in a CMMG. I used to have a better mag. But sold it and just run the SW mags after I epoxy a small shim to the mag..They work great that way. No last shot hold open..But that is not all that important to me.

                              I am thinking of trying the Catch 22 with the SW mags. Anyone ever try one of those?
