Just buy a bunch. I buy one every now and then just for fun. I have a 10/22, CZ455, Henry Lever, Mosberg 715T and a Marlin 795; plus a 22lr conversion for an AR15 (these are a blast to shoot, by the way, but not that inexpensive when you consider the cost of the AR. But if you already have an AR, then they can be a good option). They are all fun to shoot, but if I had to keep only one it would be a hard choice between the Ruger and the CZ. I've had the Ruger for almost 50 years, so that's probably the keeper, but I'm glad I don't have to choose...

If you want leave it stock then Ruger 10/22 is the winner. Ruger made about 20 difference models of 10/22. The 22LR is exempt from the CA assault weapon list, so you can find any model on line and ship to your FFL. Go to Riflegear web site, there are more than ten difference original model 10/22 from the Ruger manufacture .

Based on the criteria you have, The Ruger 10/22 is very comfortable to get behind, has a ton of aftermarket support, and is reasonably accurate as is.
Were you to state that you were thinking of adding parts to any of the rifles, I would suggest just buying a Kidd.

Any of the model you mention would be fine. Personally, I would lean towards trying a Marlin 60 or 795. I have 10/22's; not that impressed stock out of the box.

Ergonomics are a personal thing. What fits me might not fit you at all, and visa versa. You just have to handle them. If you to to the gunshop, remember what fits standing might not fit when seated at a bench.

On the Ruger and Marlins you mention, I found the stock sights awful. I changed to Tech Sights and like them. There are other sights out there too.

I actually enjoy shooting 22's with iron sights instead of scopes, even with my bad vision and bifocals...

The OP mentioned ergonomics; it is really a personal thing.

I personally find basic 10/22 stocks too short and uncomfortable. First thing I did on mine was pull the butt plate off and added an extension. If the OP wants to leave his new rifle stock, that could be a consideration.

If you like the way the Marlin's fit you might like the 597 also. I have two that have been great little shooters. I did upgrade the sights with Fire sights...

I also really like my tube fed Marlin 60.
