I think I've finally figured out what the 10/22 means-----the 22 is code for $222.22, and the 10 is code for how many different f'ng mods you have to do on it before it's usuable........

I held the Marlin and ruler today. I gotta say that I like the feel of the ruger a lot more than the marlin. It feels more like a rifle but I don't know if its worth the extra 70bucks. It is wooden stock. Arent synthetic stocks longer lasting and more durable than wooden stocks? And the savage is on sale but ten dollArs less than the marlin(I didn't se a scope). how does that compare to a ruger or marlin?

Personally and this is just me but i very much dislike wooden stocks. The ruger with wooden stock blued barrel is 70 more ya but for the same price u can get the ruger with synthetic stock. Blued barrel is the same on both. It might be a lil harder to find but some stores consistently stock them. Theyre always 229 each where i live for either wooden or synthetic and the synthetic stock with stainless barrel is 269. Word of advice, if ur gonna keep the rifle as is buy the marlin. If u wanna eventually mix it upand customize buy the ruger in stainless. Ya its 269 but its rust and elements resistent and looks really nice and dont have to reblue and resale is higher in case u get tired of it. By stainless i mean the bead blasted version. Not the true stainless

I went to the local Big5 (Oroville) looking for a Marlin 795, but they did not have any. I did not like the feel of the Ruger 10/22 they had in stock for $229, so ended up buying a Savage 64. I got it for $159 because the scope had gone AWOL.

I picked it up yesterday and saw they did have a Marlin (bolt action) for $159 but the Ruger was back up to $269.

I would still like to pick up a 795 at some point.

I just mounted this Mueller Quick Shot holographic sight to my Marlin. Still haven't fired this gun yet but I look forward to it!

Oh yeah, its a Model 60 also, not a 795.

Is it just me, or does that mueller optic look like it's mounted really high?

Anyone having trouble with stiff magazines?

Im debating on whether to buy another 60 or try out a 795. Loading the mags is one of my concerns since Ive been reading many threads about them being tough to load.

How tough can they be to load? They only weigh about 5 ounces fully packed?....

How much does a 3x9 scope normally cost? I was at big 5 and they had one for 45+tax. Is that reasonable?

Ive never loaded one myself, thats why Im asking. Apparently some owners find the spring pressure to be overkill

be sure you come back and write a review! I've read reviews of the Savage, and it wasn't on par with the marlin 795.

The only thing hard about loading the 795 mags is that at the end of the day after shooting several hundred rounds your thumb will be a bit tender. To help releive this I went searching for some kind of mag loader for the 795(and my S&W 422 mags). I saw a thread by Juker on firearms forum.com where he took a piece of 1/8 thick sheet plastic to make a ram to push down the magazine follower and then slipped in a finishing nail to hold the follower down while loading the magazine. I thought that was a pretty slick idea. He said he made it from materials he had laying around the house. So I started my search for materials to make something similar. I didn't have any luck finding a piece of sheet plastic to cut down. But I did find a broken decapping pin(.150 dia) from my reloader.
I started out with a block of left over wood that was 3/4 x 3/4 of an inch square and about 3 inches long. I drilled an appropriate sized hole in the center to put the decapping pin in, making a T shaped handle. I used a drop of Gorilla glue to hold it in place. I then rounded over the edges to make it a bit more comfortable to hold in my hand. Instead of a finishing nail I used a small piece of plastic that came from "God only knows where".( A piece of wire would work well too) I drilled 2 small holes in the end to hold the plastic straw. Everything in one place and less to loose. lol
Please excuse the terrible cell phone pictures, but it is all I have at this time.

Side view of plastic straw in holes

Using the tab to pull out plastic straw

loader on top and straw beside appropriate hole

The follower pushed down with rod and plastic straw ready to insert in hole

                                Plastic straw holding follower down

It is really easy to hold both the T-handle and the mag at the same time in one hand while slipping the straw in the middle hole on the side of the magazine. Using this I can easily load 9 rounds in with zero pressure and pull the straw out and load in the last round as normal. It is nothing to look at, but it works very well and cost me nothing but 10 minutes to make.
This works well with similar mags too. No more tender thumbs after a long day of shooting!
I have played with the idea of elongating the middle hole on the mag so that the plastic straw/nail can hold the mag follower all the way down to be able to get all 10 rounds in easily.
