Anyone found a decent compensator, not a muzzle brake, that bolts/slips on? For a .22, it jumps more than I like and I really dislike having to reset my sight picture after every shot.

I free floated the barrel yesterday, it was relatively easy once I figured out that sandpaper wasn't the way to go. I initially removed the stock, flipped the barrel around and was using the larger section toward the receiver wrapped in sandpaper to work the stock down. Pretty slow going, so out came the Dremel with a coarse sanding drum. The most significant part was the forward end of the stock. Tightening the screws down puts a lot of pressure on the barrel up there and you've got to relieve it a good amount.

Got it zeroed at about 20 yards in an indoor range. Need to get it to a real range when I get a chance. I'm not all that impressed with the factory sights, Tech Sights are next on the mod list.

I like the flexibility the DIP picatinny rail offers over the Leapers unit.

            Hallow everyone,

I'm thinking of outfitting my 795 with an after market stock such as ATI.
Questions is, is it legal here in CA? and or do we have to register that as an assault riffle due to the pistol grip?

Thanks for your time and for keeping the site as extremely informational.

Rimfire firearms and centerfire assault weapons are completely different.

With a 22lr caliber rifle, you dont need a mag lock, when using a pistol grip, folding/collapsible stock, forward grip, or flash hider. Just make sure the barrel is over 16" and the OAL is at least 26".

That stock is legal, but if you look in the beginning pages of the thread you can also see it on the gun.

I have a 795 with a BSA 3-9x40 scope and the ATI Druganov stock. As I would expect from any Marlin firearm, this thing is a tack driver. I use it quite a bit out in Hollister with my buddy shooting ground squirrels for the large ranches. 100 yard shots through the heart are a whiz for this awesome piece of machinery.

It doesn't like the Thunderbolt ammo or anything from Federal for that matter. But I feed all my .22LR's a steady diet of either Centurion .22LR or Armscor Precision .22LR. On average I will get 3-4 per 1,000 FTF's that will fire the second go around out of the Centurion and so far out of 3,500 round of Armscor Precision I have only had 1 FTF.

                  Great rifle!

They truly are big fun for a small price. My daughter just loves hers. And yesterday I found a chunk of 8/4 cherry laying around my shop---so I think I'm gonna try my hand at stock making next week and see how good I don't f up.

Same here, I tried Federal blue and red boxes, Winchester 333, Blazer, Remington golden bullets, and Armscor Precision is the most accurate of the group.

Well, the scope mount showed up today, im really happy with it. its much better made than my crappy walmart rings. i have the feeling it will not be walking on the rail.

                        not bad for $14

thanks again for posting this guys.

                          Hello all.

I'm looking to get my first real gun in the next few months. My ultimate goal is to get a GSG5, but for now want to get a simpler, cheaper gun so I can get the fundamentals down before forking over $400+.

Someone recommended the Marlin 795 as a cheap gun that is good for first-timers. Yay/nay?

Absolutely! The Ruger 10/22 is arguably a "better" rifle, but not out of the box. If you are willing to toss a few hundred ADDITIONAL dollars into the rifle, the Ruger is tops, but if you want a $100 tack driver, the Marlin is fantastic. I find it to be a bit picky on ammo (hollowpoints or non-jacketed ammo tends to Fail to Feed), and the rail on top requires a scope ring clamp with a very positive clamp (such as a continuous one piece 3" or 4" long rail clamp) to keep it securely mounted, but otherwise they are fantastic. The shoot fast, have reasonable trigger action, and are really accurate right out of the box.

I highly recommend participation in a local Appleseed event (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/f...play.php?f=222) to learn how to properly shoot (Stability, Natural Point of Aim, breathing, trigger pull, etc...). The Marlin is quite popular at these events and for good reason. It's cheap, very accurate, fun, easy to clean, and should last a long time.

My 8 year old daughter and I shoot the same rifle, and it works well for both of us. I'm pretty large at 6'-7" and 300 lbs, and she's tiny. We are both pretty happy with it, but she's a cutie :-)

(note: stainless steel barrel is an option and not at all a requirement to purchase).

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I don't plan on upgrading the gun, just keeping it stock. So based on that, the 795 may be a good option for me. I already have a decent scope and sling, so the only other investments for me are a scope mount and maybe a bipod (for the looks rather than functionality).

And yeah, I'll check the events calendar out. Thanks!

You'll definitely want a bipod for that 50 cal of your dreams (wrong State my friend!), but try the sling and proper stable-hold factors taught by Appleseed (NOT portrayed in the photo of my daughter!) before you toss good money on something that will otherwise be an obstruction to shooting well in all positions except prone. The shooting techniques you learn in Appleseed are DIRECTLY applicable to shooting larger caliber rifles.
