Marlin 795 thread

On an earlier post, someone mentioned oiling the bolt to prevent FTE. I just wanted to share my experience with a Mod60.
I bought it in '86, and have thrown a lot of lead down the bore. The bolt was starting to hang up, even with cleaning and oiling. I took it to a smith, and he said that the things were designed poorly, and expected to gall the aluminum receivers after a while. When they reach that point, they are "junk".
Well, I LIKED my junk, and decided to do my first smith job... training of no.
I discovered then, what I should have seen before, if I were careful enough in my cleaning. The bolt is rectangular, when view as a cross section. Each corner, on mine, was pretty darned sharp. I took some sand paper to the edges and rounded them just a tad. The small amount of galling in the receiver got a similar treatment, but with wet /dry paper, and some oil - since aluminum doesn't sand well. Very light sanding, until the rough edges were just gone.
Oiled, reassembled, and tested. She shoots like a brand new rifle, and has performed wonderfully ever since.
I'm getting a pair of 795s for the family, and if I see the same sort of thing in them, I'll do some very minimal relief of the sharp edges.DON'T give the ANTIs ideas. Debate the faults of anti-gun legislation AFTER it passes. Debating beforehand affects NOTHING, but it gives them technical advantages during the drafting and amending.Comment

Great info niceguy, I'll have to check that out on my 795 as well.

I may have to get another one!
Hell, even with the rebate I paid $167otd for mine and I still thought it was a great deal! I just need to get those tech sights now...

girlfriend just bought mine from big 5 the other day. They are NOT having a sale at the moment on them. It's 139.99 AFTER rebate so they are selling for 159.99 plus DROS. I was kind of pissed. Waiting for the 28th to come around so I can pick it up, but I feel as though my girlfriend way overpaid. Got kinda mad when they neglected to say that the real price was $159 until we are already at the register and wound up spending around $200 out the door.Last edited by wboughton; 12-19-2009, 10:38 PM.Comment

Noob question
Got my sons a couple of 795s for Christmas (took advantage of the Turner's Black Friday ad for $99
) We will be on BLM land tomorrow to break them in. Question is...Why don't these need some kind of tool to release the mag (ie. Bullet Button)? What is the difference between these and other rifles that need to tool?
