Very interesting. Thanks for posting.Savage A17 Semiauto 17 HMR Rifle - First Look: http://youtu.be/tb2c0WVRZzsComment

Considering that quality and consistency of all 17HMR ammo is on par with high quality match 22lr, and there IS no cheap crappy plinking 17HMR, of course it's going to cost more. It's only a penny a round more expensive than the good .22lr out there, and there's more steps to create it.
Comparing thunderbolts with anything 17HMR and complaining because the HMR costs more is ridiculous.Comment

I watched a youtube video of a guy shooting a big rabbit at 160 yds(I think), and the result was just awesome!
Its one thing for me the read data about the 17HMRs ballistics, its another thing to see its effectiveness.Comment

The .17 HMR was hurt by the Remington 597 semi-auto fiasco. Then the .17 WSM was introduced and got all the attention. So the HMR faded into the background. But with Savage's new .17 HMR semi-auto introduction, expect some renewed interest. At least until the .17 WSM comes out with semi-auto versions."Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. I have 2 and shoot them all the time. Ammo is easy to find and they are extremely accurate and a real blast to shoot.
Judging by the amount of aftermarket triggers, stocks, and accessories I would say the caliber is here to stay.Comment

For shooting squirrels, or "squeaks" as they are also known, the .17hmr is the go to round as our shots vary from 20yds to 200 yds plus. Another issue is the deflections or ricochets we hear with .22lr due to the solid bullet. The .17hmr with the Vmax tip almost never goes much beyond what it first hits, whether it is a squirrel, or the ground. Yes, the .17 is more expensive, but I have found it for sale as low as $103 per case on occasion.Comment

I still have about 5000 rounds of 17M2 and its a great little round. Don't shoot it very much since it is out of production. My 17HMR is another great round, flat shooting and accurate when not affected by wind.sigpic

22lr is for goofing around and plinking, with some hunting thrown in.
17 HMR is a high-velocity, flat-shooter for hunting small game and varmints.
Most people don't blast 500 rounds of 17 HMR just for fun like the 22lr.It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.

I love my 17 HMR. Haven't shot too many critters with it but what I have seen it is impressive. my savage is a tack driver and what I use to start new shooters on rifles because it's so accurate newbie shooters gain confidence quickly
plus ammo prices are in my budget range...more than 22 yes...but not so much for my budgetI"m just a PA native trying to understand CA laws

I would not be one of the first to buy Savages new A17, after their B mag fiasco I don't trust them to be able to make such a firearm. Like my grampa always said, once annoying(B mag), twice a pervert. The .17 HMR was hurt by the Remington 597 semi-auto fiasco. Then the .17 WSM was introduced and got all the attention. Yep 17 HMR is alive and well, and consequently numerous ground squirrels are no longer with us...
It's fun to shoot, but I primarily use it to eliminate the ground squirrels on my property. As Dave A mentioned, when shooting the Vmax rounds the danger of ricochet is minimal which is helpful.
I haven't seen it on the shelf in our area but a couple of times in the last few years, it gets snapped up almost as fast as the 22LR. I bought 500 rounds of CCI Vmax at a gun for $9.50 a box last year.01001001 00100000 01110111 01101001 01101100 01101100 00100000 01001110 01001111 00100000 01001100 01001111 01001110 01000111 01000101 01010010 00100000 01100011 01101111 01101101 01110000 01101100 01111001Comment
