17 HMR, What Happened???

Hi Rimfire gang,

I am just wondering whatever happend to the 17 HMR. Just a few years ago, this round seems to be the rage in the rimfire world (or so I thought).

Most every gun magazines are talking about the round....... it is faster than the 22LR and therefore has a flatter ballistic curve, it is " more devastating " than the 22LR with in sane shooting distance ", " it could supplant the 22LR within a few years ", etc. etc. etc.

Now, hardly anyone is talking about it, nor do I see much rimfire firearms chambered for it.

Savage is coming out with a couple of new rifles one a semi-auto its on my to buy list, even new ammo for it just a tick hotter.

Only CZ, Ruger, Savage, Marlin, just to mention a few. Who doesn't make an 17 HMR?
As SPYDER said you might be thinking of MACH2. That, if not dead, very close to being extinct.

No, I mean the 17 HMR. I know the Mach 2 didn't caught on, hardly anyone even printed any article about it. The 17 HMR meanwhile are practically in all the gun magazines.

Re-phrase, SEEMS to be not as popular as the 22 LR. If judging by SALEs, the 22LR by far outstrips the 17 HMR by several folds.

I don't think anything will supplant .22lr. .17 HMR is a popular choice for higher performance. It's made to out-perform .22lr and .22 WMR. But it is more expensive, by far.
Better performance. Longer distance.

One of the problems might be that you can make .223 cheaper than you can buy 17hmr.

Yeah, I don't see anything replacing the .22.

Too many guns out there chambered in it for it to go away.

.17 HMR is still very popular, a ton of people I know have one.

My first rimfire rifle was a 17hmr. It wont replace 22lr, but 17hmr fills in another role. 17hmr shoots like a laser out to 200 yards and kills them good. That's great for pest control, but overkill for hunting small game meat. For my main purpose of hunting tree squirrels, I have stepped back down to the classic 22lr (whenever I want to hunt with a rifle). In the thick woods, I wont be shooting beyond 50 yards anyway. Although, I have been itching to take my new 17hm2 for a spin.

17hmr is incredibly popular. Everybody makes them, there are AR uppers chambered in it, and it's currently the easiest to find rimfire ammo out there. It just costs a whole bunch more than .22lr.

Got my babies ready to go for my two boys, they use 17 HMR, I use my X-Ring built 22lr and see who can knock down all their cans first at 100yds.

The only reason 17 HMR is easy to find is its too expensive to really hoard it at $12-15 per 50. If it was cheaper it would be gone like .22 lr.
