You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
Come on...what harm??

Mine is all clean and drying in the garage before reassembly. No pitting, mirror bore, no rust. I have learned how to identify even the subtlest issues with an SKS and this thing has none other than cosmetic wear to the stock. I should have it back together shortly and will post pics.Comment

Minor hiccup during reassembly. Trigger would not fire or reset. Everything looked to be in working order and I swapped out another trigger group and it function checked fine. Turned out to be a hidden glob of cosmo inside the trigger bar which was binding up the hammer spring. Took some work to get it out but once clear it functions fine. Trigger pull is very sudden with virtually no take up, but overall quite good. It was strange to encounter this because I have disassembled and cleaned many SKS rifles full of cosmoline This was the first time the TG was gummed up beyond functioning.
Stock is somewhat on the beat up side with the giant bolt handle dent. It juxtaposes weirdly with the deep bluing of the parts. This one may be a candidate for restocking and just keeping the matching stock put away.Comment

An old warhorse ready for action again. No rust, pitting, mirror bore, decent bluing...that's a win. Thanks for the pics.Comment

Saw a sweet Yugo 59/66 (with unmodded grenade launcher) out of state for $300.00 the other day, it was pristine. I was so bummed I couldn't buy it.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

Looks good!
I noticed that the numbers of Bobby's and my gun are somewhat close. Mine is F3408 and Bobby's is F3883.
I don't want to assume that it means they were only 475 apart on the assembly line. Does anyone know how to decode the numbers?Last edited by Chevy57fan; 06-02-2014, 7:49 AM.Comment

Thanks JF. I am seriously considering having a go at refinishing the stock. It is solid but in the light of day it looks like hell. Most of the scratches and dings seem very shallow so I bet there is some nice wood under there.Comment

I think that's a great idea. It would look great with a nice Tung Oil finish. You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.

The end result of my SKS posted above was somewhat disappointing. It would have been one thing if it was a beater in and out, but the nice metal and banged up stock didn't work for me.
I had a leftover Russian SKS stock from a project that I didn't finish. Ironically, the stock is a '54 Izhevsk, which would be very rare if I had the rifle that goes with it.
I swapped it out with the Chinese stock and it fit perfectly. The original hand guard was a pretty close match with the new stock so that was left as is.
So here is the do-over. Naturally the matching original stock will be kept and stored away.

Anyone who's dealt with Classic Firearms have an idea of how long it takes from "ready for picking" until you actually get the rifle shipped? I broke down and ordered one of these from them, got my 03FFL and COE sent off and I've been in "ready for picking" for over a week now.
Common? Uncommon? I suspect they're busy because of the sale, but the hurry-up-and-wait is killing me.Comment

Mine was in "ready for picking" status for about a week before it shipped. In the end, it was worth the wait.Comment
