back in the 90's a unissued/unused batch of #4's were found in Ireland. I want to say they were selling for $250. I remember thinking...boy that is expensive...which compared to all the other enfields was true.

Today...kicking my self for not buying one.

Opinions on the best of breed?

I've heard, over the years, that the finest examples of Enfields came out of the Lithgow Arsenal in Australia. I do know that the Aussie's never made the jump to the #4 and thought their own production far superior to any others.

I've heard that also. I do have a Lithgow MkIII and there is no denying that it is a fine product.

M47C, and I'll have to look at the scope manufacturer, I can't remember. And I'm finding more and more that I do need to do some reading.

I think Long Branch in Canada would contest the claim of the Australians for quality! The commercial production SMLE rifles made by BSA were works of art for their day. Only at the depths of WW2 did UK #4s show some hasty work by semi-skilled labor but since the average life of a rifle in combat was about 90 days before something major happened to it, fit and finish really didn't matter. Post mid-50s Ishapore #1mk3s were a bit sketchy.

SMLE...one thing about my Lithgow...no bayo lug or little round thingy on the forward band. Know anything about that?
